    Vampire Consort - Haley Whitehall

    Blurb

MARY ONLY HAS MONTHS to live. Her doctor gives her an option: prepare her funeral or agree to an arranged marriage with his vampire son. She hesitates going over to the dark side because once she does she’ll be changed forever. Yet, with her life hanging in the balance, is a Halloween romance in order?

    Chapter One

MARY NEVER IMAGINED a decision any harder to make than this: choose life or choose death. Right after Dr. Briar had diagnosed her with inoperable stomach cancer, he’d offered her a way out, a way to live. Taking a newspaper out of his desk drawer he handed it to her. The paper looked like a mail-order bride advertisement with one difference. These gentlemen were not looking for brides. They were looking for consorts.

Have you heard of vampires, Miss? the doctor asked.

    Vampires?

Was the kindly doctor losing touch with reality? His white hair stood on end in several places and his spectacles had slid down far on his nose. At first his appearance had seemed endearing but now she wasn’t so sure.

Despite his unkempt appearance his office was clean as a whistle. The hardwood floor had been recently swept and not one medicine bottle appeared out of place. Even the books on his desk were neatly stacked. She didn’t know what to make of this question. Perhaps he was just joshing her.

Vampires are only in legends. They do not exist.

They do exist. They have existed for thousands of years and wisely choose to keep their existence secret.

She stared at the paper again wondering if she should hear the doctor out or politely leave. Considering he was a well-respected doctor and a pillar in the community she decided to hear him out. How do you know about them?

I sought them out during the war. He’d been conscripted into the confederate army the same as I had. If he’d had a choice he wouldn’t have enlisted. He was always a gentle soul. Dr. Briar paused and got a far off look in his emerald eyes. My son was shot and I knew even with my skilled hands I couldn’t save him.

    He became a consort?

Dr. Briar shook his head. No, Miss. He became a vampire.

    Oh.

    You still see your son?

Occasionally. He writes me. He sent me this paper.

This was getting stranger and stranger. Why did he send you this paper?

His House believes in arranged marriages. As I am his only family outside of the vampire community it is my duty to find him a consort.

She swallowed hard. You want me to become your son’s consort? She couldn’t do that, could she?

"Being bonded with him will grant you life, heal
