Chapter 1

I sat on my apartment floor and flipped through a pile of old photographs. There were a few taken at the zoo, a couple taken at a birthday party, and then a handful taken at various family gatherings. I smiled, thinking back to those days, to those moments of peace and joy. Then I sighed and ran my hand over Trixie’s back. She was the cat that I’d bought from the pound a few months ago, and she kept me company.

I’m not sure when my life of solitude really manifested, but I would have to guess that it all happened when I was getting ready to graduate from high school. My parents had just divorced, and my only sibling had just moved away to New York for college. I felt alone and depressed. Even though I lived in the bustling downtown of San Francisco, I still never felt like I really fit in with any of the popular social groups. Sure, I liked to go out every once and awhile, but I wasn’t much of a partier, and I really didn’t enjoy big crowds. For the most part, I spent my days working at the local bakery and then locked inside my apartment with Trixie. Even though I had roommates, I still often felt lonely.

I did have a few friends, and I knew that I could count on them if I ever needed to, but it still took a lot of effort on my part to get to know them really well, and to open up about any personal aspects of my life. Candy, Felicia, and Rebecca were the friends that I’d met at University . I had decided to go back for one year and focus on studies. I thought that maybe I could pique my interest in a new subject, and that maybe it would be enough to tempt me to enroll full-time. But it ended up being a short-lived experience. I wasn’t thrilled with the big classes, and I was too self-conscious to speak in front of the class. Yet meeting Candy, Felicia, and Rebecca made it worth the attempt.

I liked to have them over on nights that I wasn’t working. We liked to rent movies and eat ice cream, and sometimes we talked about men. Candy was the prettiest of our group. With her long, thick blond hair, it was obvious why men found her painfully attractive. She had a wonderful smile and big, blue eyes that she liked to accentuate with silver eye shadow and black mascara. I wasn’t too big on wearing make-up.
