Question the ‘Fuck you’ Syndrome
Ignorance, ‘sin’ of the day
Gerhard Brummer
(Philosopher, Clinical Therapist, Theologian, Sex Therapist, Writer, Designer, Businessman and an interest in Science)
I want to thank all the good people who have played and are still playing a major role in my life. Special thanks to my wife Carla, my two sons Rehardt Gunther and Bernard Gerhard, who are the joy of my life. I love them so much.
This is my letter to you from just a normal guy who:
scratched his knees on the same tar road as you;
played on the same ground as you did;
grew up in the same street as you did;
went to the same church as you did;
attended the same school as you did;
have the same dreams as you do;
breathe the same air as you do.
What makes you more special than me?

INTRODUCTION
How do you deceive yourself via ignorance? Do you actually mean anything; do you really? Do you have any value? Are you sure? Are you going anywhere? If so, where? If not, why? Do you have any present meaning or any future purpose? Who are you, anyway? Are you a blob of protoplasm, a molecular structure and here by chance and going nowhere? On a popular television space fantasy a friendly computer was asked these questions. It replied: It does not compute.
If the machine’s answer is inadequate, it may not mean that no adequate answers exist. It may mean that the machine has none. What is your reply to the latter questions? Wait! Please read and understand the book first, then share your answer.
What you believe to be true may be interpreted very differently in this book, sometimes head-on. Please I ask of you to hold onto your beliefs that keep your life together. Keep your ‘parachute’ of life nearby. With this book you will find yourself in the rarified atmosphere of new ideas, bombarded on every side; it is not wise to jump without your ‘parachute’. Instead, hang onto those things that have always held you together and allow them to let you down gently. Of course, by the time you reach the ground you may have changed in all sorts of important ways. You may even decide to use a different ‘parachute’ from now on. But, in the meantime, do not discard the one you have – not until you have the new road tested. In other words, do not despise what you have received.
Sometimes you read a few books and take a few courses and decide that: Everything everybody ever told me before could be wrong. Now I have quite a good idea of what the truth is. Everything I ever heard before is wrong.
This may lead to a feeling of despair or you may experience a feeling of rebellion because the things that you have always believed in are obviously wrong. If you are true to yourself you’ll realize that the latter is not rational, because some things may be true that you have been taught in the past. New ideas are not always better than old ones. Thus, exotic ideas are not per se better than old ideas. The exotic may turn out to be preferable. But the fact that something is exotic and that you have never heard it before, does not automatically make it true. So, begin where you are.
You will realize, as you wrestle with this book, that I say things as they are. It might be my collective perceptions, but what I ask of you is to really listen to the ‘music’ of this book. Many of us were and still are victims, in some way, of the psyche of what is revealed in this book. Maybe you too! This is my story.
It was the night of the 29th of August 1966 when I gasped my first breath of air. I grew up in a normal Afrikaner household - in The Republic of South Africa. I did all that was necessary to keep my parents on their toes; well at least I survived all the hidings. I was brought up as a very conservative Christian. At school I was one of the guys who did not look forward to the day when the exam reports were presented. After school I applied to enter a Teaching College. My application was denied because I did too badly in languages. Then, I applied for a Science degree at a leading University in South Africa. I got accepted. At least they took my IQ into consideration.
In my second year at Stellenbosch University I did what most students do, change course. I started studying theology. I was so conservative then that during philosophy exams I would take a red pen with, only to write a stinking letter to the professor telling him to stick his philosophy up his arse. At that stage of my life I believed that only the church of Jesus Christ knows the way to happiness in life, nothing else. He will show us the way and that we do not need or dare question the directions he portrays to us in the ‘holy’ bible.
My whole existence crumbled while I was studying for a master’s degree in literature, history and philosophies of the time period in which the bible was developed. Everything I based my life upon was suddenly one big question. I started discovering the ‘flaws’ in this ‘holy’ bible that I once based my life upon. When I went to the Theological Seminary I was the only one in my class who studied further. I struggled through those three years (did quite well), got my degree and decided to extend my study.
I started a master’s degree in 1993, which is a combination between Clinical Psychology and practical, ethical and philosophical Theology. It was the 16th of April, that same year, when I reached rock bottom again. I eventually realized that the philosophy of religion does not work that well. This statement became very clear during the time when I did my internship in a state hospital and psychiatric hospitals. While doing my master’s thesis I discovered more and more the ‘flaws’ in religions like Christianity, which get covered by piles and piles of theological smoke. Theological students are conditioned by the system to read and study the ‘right’ books. There is a saying in life: you are what you read.
It is very true. Please do not misunderstand me. I have met some brilliant doctors and professors in psychology, medicine and theology. The only problem is that some of them are so brilliant in their fields, that they are actually dumb and stupid in wise terms.
In my master’s thesis I exposed these ‘flaws’ and asked for a new approach in counseling people. I asked for a new approach where no religious philosophy is absolute or exclusive in any way. I asked for the acceptance of human interpretations in the process of knowing the truth. This will be explained in the book. It boils down to the fact that Christianity or whatever religious group is not the only ‘truth’ out there. I had to defend my thesis before a panel of eight professors and doctors. The thesis could not be discounted and
