    Chapter 1

Michelle, I can’t watch the kids all week. I have classes.

I know, Bobby, but I need a hand until we find a new nanny.

The phone at his ear, Bobby Gregg adjusted his backpack on his shoulder and walked down the corridor to the classroom he was headed to. Okay. Let me just hit this computer class I’m scheduled for now, and I’ll see if I can pick them up after school.

    Thanks. You’re a good uncle.

Yeah…yeah. Bobby looked into the computer-lab room. I suppose I should help you out, after all, you let me live there.

    Yeah, about that… she said.

Gotta go. He smiled and disconnected the call. He entered the classroom and took a seat at an available desk. Once he removed his workbook out of his backpack, he put the bag by his feet.

A woman sat at the workstation next to him.

Hi, Olivia. He smiled at her

Hi, Bobby. She brushed her hair back from her face and placed a cup of store-bought coffee on the desk, then sat down. How was your weekend?

Speaking quietly, he leaned closer to her, Drama-filled. He rolled his eyes.

    Really? Why?

Bobby glanced behind him and then said, My sister’s nanny tried to get into her husband’s pants.

Uh-oh. Olivia sipped her coffee, her darkly-lined eyes sparkling in the florescent lighting. Let me guess…he hired her.

After a chuckle, Bobby said, I don’t know who hired her, but my sister fired her.

Did they end up having an affair behind her back?

Ya know, that’s a good question. My brother-in-law, Jake, said no, but… He shrugged. So, while she’s on the hunt for a new nanny, I’ve been elected to pick up the kids. He checked the time. That means I’m going to miss study hall.

If I hear of anyone who’s looking for a nanny job, I’ll let you know.

Thanks. Bobby sat straight in the chair as the instructor entered the room.

By two-fifteen, Bobby pulled his older hatchback in front of the elementary school and found parking. The area was packed with cars as the school day let out. Bobby kept his eye on the main entrance and figured his sister had already let the kids know he was coming to get them.

He tapped his phone while he waited, texting, and then heard a loud slap on his window. He spotted one of a pair of twins, Chad, smiling happily at him.

Hey, sport. Bobby made sure the back door was unlocked.

Mom said you were picking us up. Chad climbed into the back and stuffed his book bag on the floor.

    Where’s Hayden?

She’s coming. Chad removed an electronic game out of his bag and after he fastened his seatbelt he played it.

    The sound effects were annoying.

Little dude? Can you mute it or use ear-buds?

Chad plugged headphones in and stuffed the buds into his ears.

He spotted Hayden coming their way. She looked into the backseat and then walked to the opposite side to get in beside her twin brother.

    Hi, Uncle Bobby.

Hi, Hayden. He made sure she was buckled in and then tried to get out of the chaos of the afterschool traffic.

Why did Mom fire Tiffany? she asked.

I think you need to ask your mom. He slowed for a crosswalk with a guard holding up a lollipop stop-sign.

Can we get burgers and fries on the way home? Chad asked.

No. Bobby drummed his fingers on the steering wheel since the slow driving and traffic surrounding the school was annoying him.

    I liked her, Hayden said.

Sorry, Hayden. Bobby finally was free of the traffic and hit the main streets.

Why can’t Mom find someone who stays? Hayden swung her feet, kicking the back of the seat.

Bobby tolerated it for five seconds. Hey, seriously? He looked at her in the rearview mirror.

She quit kicking it. We’ve been through, like, a million nannies.

Like…four. Bobby stopped for a red signal.

Why can’t you just watch us? Chad asked.

Because I have to get to class too. You’re not the only one in school.

You’re too old to go to school. Chad kicked the back of his seat.

Bobby rubbed his face in frustration and kept driving.

He parked in front of his sister’s six-bedroom split-level home in the Thousand Oaks area of Los Angeles. Before he gathered his things and climbed out of his car, the twins were already racing to the front door.

Bobby hauled his backpack to his shoulder and located his key. He opened the door for them, and they barreled in, going right for the kitchen.

Yo! Hang on. Bobby set his pack down and knew his sister liked the nannies to give them healthy snacks after school. He had a look into the cabinets. Wash your hands, please.

They stood at the kitchen sink and scrubbed up together.

He removed fruit, already cut up in packaged portions, as well as juice boxes and pretzels.

They snatched them up and rushed off.

Do your class work! he yelled after them.

    They giggled and disappeared.

Bobby sent his sister a text, ‘They’re home. Please find someone to do this. I missed study hall.’

    Sorry.’

Bobby removed his own work from his backpack, filled a tumbler glass with pineapple juice, and sat at the dining room table to work.

By six pm, Bobby packed up his laptop and workbook and heard the front door. He cleared out of the dining room and spotted his brother-in-law coming home from his accounting job in the downtown LA core.

Hi, Bobby. Jake loosened his necktie.

Hi, Jake. Bobby crossed his arms and leaned against the arched wall between the dining room and the living room.

Thanks for picking up the kids. He looked tired.

Yeah…I can’t fill-in for the nanny, dude. I missed study hall and if I keep leaving early, I’ll miss class.

    I know.

Bobby took a look down the hall and then up the carpeted stairs before he said, Did you really cheat on Michelle?

Jake peered around as well, and then closed the gap. I didn’t cheat. Did she say I did?

    Well… Bobby shrugged.

No… he whispered, It was harmless flirting. I didn’t even touch her.

Maybe you should hire an older gal, or a guy. I mean, dude? Can’t resist coming on to a nanny? Bobby shook his head.

Yeah. Whatever. Jake left the living room, removing his suit jacket as he walked down the hall.

When the twins heard he was home, Chad yelled from his room, Dad! I’m hungry!

    Hayden chanted, Pizza! Pizza!

Bobby headed up the stairs to his bedroom, and didn’t know what the deal was with his sister and her husband, but he didn’t want to be involved.

A half hour later, Michelle arrived home. She appeared frazzled and disoriented.

Both he and Jake were in the kitchen trying to figure out what to do for dinner. So far, they had cut up salad.

    Bobby greeted her. Hey.

She gave him a look of frustration and carried her purse to her bedroom.

He turned to peek at Jake, but it appeared he was in the doghouse. Bobby headed towards his sister, pausing outside her bedroom door. The kids want pizza.

That’s fine. She tossed her purse down and ran her hand over her hair.

    He said he didn’t cheat.

She held up her hand, as if telling him to stop talking about it.

A friend recommended someone to me. She used her thumb to scroll on her phone.

He approached her and glanced at her phone from behind her shoulder, catching a strong scent of perfume on her.

But… She met his gaze. It’s a guy.

So what? He narrowed his eyes. You tried women and they didn’t work out. At least with a guy you don’t have to worry about Jake fucking him.

    I know. But…

He pointed a warning finger at her. I’m not playing nanny. I can’t cook, and I can’t keep missing classes.

I need to call his references.

Call. What’s his name? Just search him on the computer.

    Gabe.

    Gabe what?

    Fuck.

Gabe Fuck? He tried not to laugh since his sister was in crisis-mode.

She held up her finger telling him to wait, and made a call. Hi, my name is Michelle Gregg-Davis. You were given as a reference for a nanny? His name is Gabe?

Bobby heard his niece and nephew begging Jake for pizza. He returned to the kitchen and said, Michelle says pizza is fine.

The twins bounced up and down cheering.

Jake appeared frustrated as he looked for a menu on the top of the fridge.

Bobby used his phone. Just tell me what to order.

Pepperoni! Chad yelled, with stuffed crust!

And cinnamon twists for dessert! Hayden jumped like a pogo stick in front of her father.

Jake said, Get two pies, one just cheese, the other pepperoni.

    Bobby used the online form.

    Cinnamon twists! Cinnamon twists!

    Jake muttered, And cinnamon twists.

Damn, you’re so strict it’s disgusting. Bobby laughed.

Michelle entered the room wearing comfy clothes; her sweats and an oversized flannel shirt. She still held her phone.

    Mom…mom…mom…

Bobby didn’t know how they withstood the noise. There was no doubt a nanny kept things controlled and quiet. Unlike two exhausted parents.

Yes? Michelle took a bottle of wine out of the refrigerator.

Dad’s ordering cinnamon twists. Hayden spun around in celebration.

Jake asked Bobby, How are you paying?

You can use your credit card online or pay when they deliver.

Jake took his wallet out of his pocket. Bobby stood beside him, holding his phone. As Jake relayed the numbers, Bobby plugged them in.

Guys! Michelle yelled to quiet the twins as she poured wine into a stemmed glass. Inside voices?

Bobby finished the online ordering of the food and then relaxed in the den watching TV until it arrived.

His niece and nephew trotted up to the second floor to their own bedrooms, and he heard his sister and her husband still discussing the babysitting scandal in hushed but angry tones.

As a commercial aired, Bobby muted the sound and could catch his sister saying, Now I have to interview nannies again. Do you know how hard it is finding someone I trust with kids?

    I didn’t have a fling with Tiffany. I swear.

I’d make you do it, but you’d hire another cheerleader.

Bobby sighed and aimed the remote at the TV, wondering if he had a friend’s place he could crash at. But, while he was paying for college, he was strapped for cash.

His sister joined him, her wineglass filled to the rim. She sat heavily beside him and propped her feet a hassock. What are you watching?

Knowing she was already a powder keg about to blow, he handed her the remote.

She aimed it and sorted through the menu, then chose news.

So? Did you figure out if ‘Gabe’ is your guy? he asked.

I have to meet with him and keep checking references.

Did you get a last name?

    Fox.

Bobby blinked. Wait. Is he a nanny or a porn star?

She swatted him and kept her glass to her mouth, nursing on the booze as if it were her lifeline. And at the moment, it may have been.

    ~

By nine pm, Bobby, his sister and Jake, had sunk into the sectional sofa like they were made of liquid. Each had their legs on a hassock, propped up, their stocking feet lined up in a row.

Michelle checked the time and managed to sit upright. She had consumed an entire bottle of red wine.

Both he and Jake watched her leave the room.

After she stopped in the kitchen, she returned. Jake, can you make them their lunches?

Huh? Jake perked up and appeared angry. Why can’t you make them?

I’m going to get them bathed and in bed. Can you please make them their lunches for tomorrow?

I can get them washed and tuck them in. Jake sat up.

Bobby rubbed his forehead, since a battle was looming once more.

Just make a sandwich and put it in a bag! she yelled.

    What kind of sandwich?

Oh, my God! Michelle walked off.

Dude? Bobby shook his head at Jake. You’re insane. He stood from the sofa and headed to the kitchen. Yawning, feeling tired and ready for bed, Bobby opened up the fridge and removed a few items from it, setting them on the counter. He opened up a bag of bread and began making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Jake entered the kitchen a second later and noticed what he was doing. Thanks, man.

No problem. He sliced the sandwiches on a diagonal and stuffed them into sealed plastic bags. Can you get me two brown lunch bags?

They have boxes. Jake spun around as if he felt lost once more.

    Check their book-bags.

Jake reacted to the suggestion and left the kitchen.

Bobby opened the fridge and removed juice boxes and fruit.

He made two piles of food, one for each twin and added napkins and even hand-wipes.

Another hushed argument floated throughout the house. Bobby had no idea how this was going to turn out because at the moment it felt as if his sister was about to boot Jake out.

She stormed into the kitchen, holding two lunchboxes, and dumped out the leftover contents, rinsed them, and then added the food Bobby had prepared.

    Thanks, she said to him.

No problem. I’m going to bed. Bobby walked by a stoic Jake on his way up the stairs to his room. "You couldn’t make a fucking
