From an early age, my son loved to talk. Everywhere he went he treasured meeting new people and enthusiastically questioned everything around him. Daddy, what’s that?
Daddy, what’s this do?
Daddy, can I pet that?
It was equally delightful and exhausting.
One day, during a rousing round of 50 questions, my son asked me, But how do you know?
I knew any rational answer would lead to an endless parade of more questions. I chose instead to tell him I learned it in the Daddy Book.
I explained that the Daddy Book held all the knowledge a father would need in order to be a great dad. Being just four years old, he believed me.
Over the next year, whenever new debates arose, he would adorably ask, Well, what’s the Daddy Book say?
I would then pull the Daddy Book off the shelf (actually a nice leather-bound Jewish prayer book) and read
the corresponding lesson. Having been satisfied, he would say, You were right!
In time, as he began learning his ABCs, the Daddy Book had to be retired. The Daddy Book wasn’t real, but the idea of it really stuck with
