Change has arrived in America. With it comes a new world order—the rise of a theocratic regime called the Republic of Gilead which takes the Old Testament at its every word.
Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale is told through the eyes of Offred, one of the ill-fated Handmaids in the new Republic of Gilead. In the present world, Handmaids are stripped of their own names, their rights, their families, and even their ability to read and write. Now a mere possession of one of the new regime's formidable Commanders and his Wife, Offred's value lies only in her fertility and her capacity to bear a child.
Gripping and grotesque, The Handmaid's Tale is a dystopian masterpiece that illustrates what could happen when the liberal transforms into the puritanical, and what people are capable of when the puritanical ultimately distorts into the radical.

Overview
Change has arrived in America. The country was ravaged by war, and so is the west coast by nuclear breakdown in the San Andreas Fault. Disease and pollution from the resulting fallout led to cases of infertility. The president, along with the nation's senate, was executed by mysterious Christian theocrats that have taken control of the crumbling nation. Republic of Gilead, formerly New England, is now governed by a shady government whose laws are in accordance to the Bible.
The story centers on Offred, the Handmaid of one the new regime's formidable Commanders. Offred is a surrogate mother for the infertile Commander's Wife—Serena Joy, a former televangelist. Offred is still fertile, so as a Handmaid, she must bear children for the Commander's Wife. She will participate in an impregnation ceremony—one of which will not gratify sexual pleasures—and her children shall be considered the Wife's. The other female servants in the household look down on Offred, but they hope that she will be a successful surrogate. As Offred tries to carry on in this new world order, she struggles to put the memories of a past life behind her — the memories of her husband and their young daughter.
The new Gilead's features are introduced throughout the novel. These features include torture, coerced sex, exhibition of the bodies of traitors
, the death sentence, and most of all, belief in the extreme principles stated in the Bible. Offred is overwhelmed by the sudden shift of America from her childhood's 1970 liberal to the present radical.
Offred eventually adapts to the changes in her life. She becomes involved with Nick, her servant and also part of the covert resistance movement. The Commander begins to see her in private—something considered illegal under the
