      "I want answers and I want them now!" Shane demanded.

      I told you. I don’t know nothin’ about no stolen stuff!

      Eduardo, you’re a good thief, but a poor liar! Shane nodded at Nick. Turn on the ‘lie detector.’

      Shane watched his sergeant at arms, Nick Tank Hall, slam his fist into the thief’s face. And then he thumped him again, in a quick one-two combination.

      After a splitting howl, Eduardo cried, "Mother of God! You can’t get blood out of a stone. I don’t know! How many languages do I have to say it in?"

      You do know. As soon as you tell me, you can deal with me instead of Tank.

      Blood dripped from Eduardo’s nose, a split in the skin along his cheekbone oozing crimson trails, while his eyes glazed over with a mixture of pain and fear. "I have no information for you, Shane. You’re gonna kill me for nothing?" Eduardo said.

      Shane knew another crippling blow like the one thrown by Tank would leave the young gangster worthless for their cause. His body trembled with a fragile vulnerability that mirrored the cracks in his shattered spirit. Ice your hooks for a moment, Tank. Let’s see if Eduardo can remember what he claims he doesn’t know. Shane crossed his arms over his chest, his brown eyes narrowed at the gangster’s swollen face.

      Eduardo shut his eyes and started praying in Spanish.

      Stop that! Shane said. There is no God in this room.

      The young man opened his eyes. "I know you have no compassion. I pray because I don’t have the information you want. If I’m going to die, I want to at least arrive where the angels sing and not where the devil will light my cojones on fire."

      Shane stepped closer and leaned forward. "You can make this easy on yourself, Eduardo. You talk to me
