    Chapter One

    ––––––––

Chari paced back and forth in her bedroom, tracing an invisible path from her bed to her closet and then back again. Her right hand was pressed to her forehead, while her left hand gripped her waist tightly.

Did I just allow a vampire into my mind? Chari, what on earth were you thinking? The ceiling fan whirled rapidly, emitting a faint squeak with each revolution. I can’t believe this. Frustration boiled within her, and she let out an exasperated growl before sinking onto her bed, burying her face into her hands.

When her cell phone began to ring, she lifted it and, fueled by her frustration, mimicked the motion of hurling it toward the wall. On the third ring, she finally answered, You’ve reached Chari.

Hudson’s breathing grew more pronounced, and Chari imagined his face contorting with anger. In the silence that followed, she heard a loud thud, and she knew his fist had struck something.

Hudson, I’m fine. Really, I’m okay.

You literally dropped your guard and approached that creature, Chari. That’s far from okay. Does this have something to do with your mother? Hudson’s voice was concerned but a hint of anger was there, too.

Chari placed her phone on speaker and stood, turning to face her full-length mirror. She lifted her shirt, running her fingers over the newly raised scars along her midriff. Like what?

Hudson hesitated. I don’t know. You tell me. There are rumors that you’ve been spending time at Leon’s Bar, and . . .

Wait, do you have someone tracking my movements and reporting them to you, Hudson? Chari said,
