    Grades 4-7

There have been a plethora of Sherlock Holmes mystery series aimed at middle grade readers-- most involving a Holmes relative who has inherited the detecting gene. This particular series, based on the original stories, looks like it will be a winner for a number of reasons. Certainly, the graphic novel format may appeal to readers who might not normally pick up a Sherlock Holmes mystery. The authors and illustrator do an excellent job of keeping the original tone and that 19th century feel. The language is accessible without being overly simplistic. All in all, a solid retelling of a classic Sherlock Holmes mystery.
