About this ebook

Thomas Sayre came with his family from England to Lynn, Massachusetts, in the early 1630's. Among descendants of Thomas were clergymen, surgeons, attorneys, ambassadors, and representatives of almost every profession. Francis B., cowboy, professor of law, and ambassador, was son-in-law of former President Woodrow Wilson. Zelda was the wife of American novelist, F. Scott Fitrzgerald, and subject of one of his books. David A. was a silversmith, banker, and founder of Lexington's Sayre School. Many Sayre descendants were taken by wars in service to America and never had the chance to win recognition for their abilities.
SAYRE FAMILY another 100 years, in a large part, focuses on the early pioneers who came to or passed through the Ohio Valley of West Virginia and Ohio. At least three direct descendants of Thomas had made settlements in that area by the Nineteenth Century. One, David Sayre, came from New Jersey about 1778, and left many descendants who still lived in that area at the beginning of the Twenty-first Century. The bulk of this genealogy covers those, while other Sayre families whose ancestral links were not discovered are also included. The three generations of ancestors above each family block makes tracing easier.

Information used in the preparation of this book has been collected and assembled by humans. Humans are prone to make mistakes. I have found conflicts in dates by the same persons given to me at different times. I have had different names and/or dates for the same person given to me by different contributors, and in some instances, from the same family. Having no personal knowledge of the individual families or means of confirming all data given to me, I used what I was given in most cases. I tried to be consistent and not change anything. I always requested that data be written and mailed to me, however, some things were given me by phone. Of material received both ways, I could have misunderstood.

Some information, even if correct and appropriate at the time of writing, could seem incorrect when read years later. Divorce, job changes, births, death, etc. cause changes. Dates recorded in family bibles often disagree with dates on tombstones and in the courthouses. There are typos where the fingers misspell and make a number wrong. For instance the date, 1820 may appear as 1920, and 1920 may appear as 1902, etc. I must apologize for my lack of skill, knowledge and use of established standards. Especially to those who were wrongly affected, I apologize.

Particular attention was given to the material compiled for this work to avoid invasion of privacy. I have assumed that everyone who contributed data to me intended me to use it in this genealogy. It will be the responsibility of each reader to respect the privacy and rights of all people named herein. I made every attempt to obtain permission to use information from all sources whether or not a copyright was registered. In the text and with illustrations, I have attempted to credit all contributors and sources, published and unpublished. Any credits that have been overlooked were unintentional, and I offer my most sincere apology. Special care was taken to avoid copyright infringement.

I had no formal training in book writing and computers. In completing this book using computers, I became self-taught and compiled everything using my own logic.

    WHY-A GENEALOGY-WHY?

"There is a moral and philosophical respect for our ancestors which elevates the character and improves the heart.

"It is wise for us to recur to the history of our ancestors. Those who are regardless of their ancestors, and of their posterity, who do not look upon themselves as a link connecting the past with the future, in the transmission of life from their ancestors to their posterity, do not perform their duty to the world.

To be faithful to ourselves, we must keep both our ancestors and their posterity within reach and grasp of our thoughts and our affections, living in the memory and retrospect of the past, and hoping with affections and care for those who are to come after us. We are true to ourselves only when we act with pride for the blood we inherit, and which we are to transmit to those who shall soon fill our places. Daniel Webster

    CARRIE SAYRE’S JOURNEY (MAP)

I began genealogical research about 1960 as my own project. A scrap of paper with birth, marriage, and death dates for my Grandmother Sayre’s family was found in an old trunk that my dad kept. I thought, How neat! I’ll just do that for as many of the family as I can. For more than twenty years I did genealogy for my own pleasure, seldom giving thought that my work would pass on to someone who would want to know where I got my information. About 1980, I became acquainted with Ada Ruth Sayre who had collected an enormous amount of Sayre Genealogy mostly from the Jackson-Mason County, West Virginia area. We combined our research materials.

In 1995, when my employment was taken away, I decided that I would like to be a certified professional genealogist. When I started studying for certification, one thing quickly became clear. I had been lax in citing my sources over all those years. It turns play into work, but in the end, source citations are something nice to have. I went back and tried to locate sources that were not originally recorded, but I was unsuccessful in many cases. So take a tip from someone who learned late, CITE YOUR SOURCES!

In this genealogy, I never used footnotes, but attempted to cite sources in the text. I included three ancestral generations above each family block, then listed up to three generations of descendants under each family block. Where there were more than three generations on one or more of the descendants, I used a plus (+) symbol and moved forward to start a new family block for that descendant. I tried to keep these in order, but in cases you find some out of order, it may be because of my error, or because of the way I received the information. Please take the time and patience to try to understand.

I attempted to write this entire work in past tense. One of the strongest influencing factors for that was the picture of The Old Sayre House opposite page 18 in SAYRE FAMILY by Theodore M. Banta where the caption included the words still standing. That book was reprinted several times, and many descendants made an effort in the 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s to go to Southampton to see that house. The book was published in 1901, the house was torn down in 1912, so many visitors to Southampton were somewhat disappointed. Once something is written, circumstances which made it true and factual at the time often change, but the printed words remain unchanged.

Conflicting concerns have arisen from including adopted children. Some have said, Don’t include me if you must identify me as adopted. Others have asked that their adopted children be included without condition or reservation. Others are critical of including adopted children in families other than their own. Some raise eyebrows and point a wicked finger at the illegitimate links. I tried to please as many as possible. I tried to remove the families who asked to be removed. While dealing with the importance of genealogy in its strictest sense, I tried to be accurate in reporting. I compiled this genealogy in the spirit of family and integrity."

Where known, I tried to include cause of death. I consider the most accurate source to be from a person’s death certificate. In many cases, however, it was simply reported by a family member.

Many years and efforts of many people have gone into compiling, proofreading and correcting this material, yet, there will be errors. Once a book is in print, errors cannot be corrected in that print. However, when you find errors you can make notes in your own book, and you can tell other people. A good sharp No. 2 pencil is the best tool I have found for entering notes into books. Ink often bleeds into the paper fibers and becomes unsightly and sometimes unreadable.

APPRECIATION-To all who provided moral support, information, and finances, I express my sincere appreciation. If I were to list all, the list would surely be enormous and someone would surely be missed. When you read this, those of you who contributed will know, but also know that others reading this for the first time will appreciate you most. Those of you who are reading for the first time, know that we tried to accurately provide you a record and lasting memorial to the Sayre family.

DESCENDANTS OF (#554) BENJAMIN AND NANCY (TUCKER) SAYRE

    554. BENJAMINSAYRE was born 21 April 1774 in Elizabethtown Township, Essex County, New Jersey. At an unusually young age, for some unknown reason, Benjamin received a land grant of 400 acres situated on Middle Island Creek, part of which was included in the formation of Tyler County recorded at Richmond, Virginia 30 July 1786. Benjamin married (by Rev. James Fleming) in Monongalia County 12 March 1795 NANCY ANN TUCKER who was born about 1779 in Virginia. She was a daughter of Henry Tucker who was born in Maryland about 1744. She may have been a sister to a William Tucker who married in Harrison County 1808 Margaret Ash, and had land on Booths Creek. He, reportedly, had a sister, Nancy Ann, and he died 1843 in Meigs County, Ohio.

The surname Tucker is believed to be English occupational—a fuller, or walker of cloth (Bardsley, DS, 768). The noun is derivative of the Old English verb, tucian meaning to torment. Of the surnames deriving from the work of the fuller, Tucker apparently came from southwest England. Lands were claimed on the waters of Booths Creek by Henry Tucker to include his settlement made in the year 1775. (Taylor County, Brinkman, chaper 1) Ref.: The Monongalia Story, Volume I, Earl L. Core, p. 291.

District Court Monongalia County, Virginia, Thomas Laidley was summoned to answer Benjamin Sayre in a plea of debt of $20 due by note 11 January 1798. Demand note was signed 7 October 1797. Ref. Envelope 54.

Tyler County was formed in 1814 from Ohio County. Ritchie County was formed in 1843 from Harrison, Lewis, and Wood Counties. Doddridge County was formed in 1845 from Harrison, Tyler, Ritchie, and Lewis Counties. On several trips into the areas of Tyler and Doddridge counties, I failed to locate cemetery markers for Benjamin and Nancy.

Benjamin Sayre and wife, Nancy conveyed to Solomon Sayre, a tract or part of 400 acres granted to Benjamin in 1786. The land (partial on which he lived was reserved) was situated upon waters of Middle Island Creek. Tyler County Deed Book 1, page 432, 10 June 1822. Benjamin Sayre filed on 200 acres in 1825 situated on the left fork of Arnold’s Creek, a branch of Middle Island Creek.

His story was erroneously recorded in T. M. Banta’s SAYRE FAMILY in 1901. Historians for the reunions of descendants of Jedediah Sayre, Benjamin’s brother, recorded that Benjamin was drowned when dragged under by a water wheel of a grist mill on which he was working. Public land records indicate that his death occurred about or during the year 1829. 1830 and 1840 census reports indicate an older woman, (Nancy) was in the household of Hiram Sayre. It is believed that Nancy died sometime after 1846 in Doddridge County, (West) Virginia.

Tyler County DEED BOOK #2, Page 463 dated 10 June 1829 mentions Nancy Sayre, widow and five other surviving heirs of Benjamin: Snoden and Mary (Sayre) Kinney; Squire and Lydia Sayre; Manuel and Hannah (Sayre) Dotson; John and Susannah (Sayre) Dotson; and Hiram and Mary Sayre conveyed land where Benjamin Sayre resided at his death to Solomon Sayre. Children of Benjamin and Nancy (Tucker) Sayre:

    1.   MARY SAYRE married 1st, JAMES JARVIS; 2nd, SNOWDEN SLATER KINNEY. +

    2.   SOLOMON MOSES SAYRE married LYDIA DAVIS. +

    3.   SQUIRE C. SAYRE married LIDDIA DAVIS. +

    4.   HANNAH SAYRE married EMANUEL D. DOTSON.+

    5.   HIRAM T. SAYRE married MARY J. SMITH.+

    6.   SUSANNAH SAYRE married JOHN DOTSON. +

[1830 and 1840 Virginia Census records show the families of Snowden Kinney, Hiram, Squire, and Solomon Sayre in Tyler County. John and Manuel Dotson families were in Harrison County. Counties were being formed from this area after 1840. In 1843, Ritchie was formed from parts of Harrison, Lewis, and Wood. Then in 1845 Doddridge was formed from parts of Ritchie, Tyler, Harrison, and Lewis. Therefore, establishment of new county boundaries could have placed these families in the different counties without them actually moving. RS]

MARYSAYRE was born about 1796 in Monongalia County, Virginia. She married 1st, in Tyler County about 1816 JAMES JARVIS who died about 1827 or 1828. Mary Jarvis married 2nd, 17 February 1829 SNOWDEN SLATER KINNEY, who was born 11 August 1803 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Census records (1880) in some cases indicate a Virginia birth place for Snowden; others give Pennsylvania. Mary died 8 March 1875 and Snowden died 21 August 1889 West Union, Doddridge, West Virginia. Burial was in Coleman Cemetery, West Union, Doddridge, West Virginia.

    KINNEY

It is possible, but not certain, that the Kinney surname descended from McKinney. There is evidence that the Kinney family of Doddridge County and Snowden descended from one David Kinney, born about 1755 in New Jersey. David served in the Revolutionary War from Greenwich Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. He moved first, about 1793 to George’s Creek, Maryland, then to Greene County, Pennsylvania about 1797. He died there in Aleppo Township 28 November 1835. His wife, Elizabeth, whom he married in March 1782, was born about 1761 and died between 1845 and 1850. Their children were John, David, George, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, James, Anna, Margaret and Christney.

Last Will and Testament of John Kinney Doddridge County, WV, Will Book 1, page 15; and Marriage Data of John: from Pat Pulasky.

John Kinney was born the 28th of January 1783 or 1784. He married 1st Elizabeth White and 2nd Eleanor Tucker. He married 1st 29 March 1803 in Greene County, Pennsylvania, Elizabeth White who was born 18 May 1785 to Israel and Sarah (Slater) White. After Elizabeth died, John married 2nd Eleanor Tucker who was born 26 February 1792 in Monongalia County, (W) Virginia to Henry and Mary Tucker. She died in Doddridge County in 20 October 1855. John died in July 1855 in Doddridge County, (W) Va. Burial was in the Kinney Cemetery, Doddridge, West Virginia. John and Elizabeth had children: Snowden; Israel; James; David.; Sarah; Mary; John; George; Isaac; Elizabeth; Nancy; Eliza and Elmina. (Names in Kinney Family Bible).

I would like to quote a couple of entries from The History of Doddridge County, West Virginia, Nutter’s Fork Community, 1927, by Lily Smith Corathers. "John Kinney, Sr. was another old time resident of Nutter’s Fork. There were three sons: George, a carpenter; Israel, a farmer, and a third son, Snowden (also a farmer).

"The older residents of this community now tell the story of Rock Run Billy Davis and Snowden Kinney who killed an enormous wolf with an axe. There was some kind of neighborhood gathering, a log-rolling perhaps, at what is now known as the Ford farm. (Snowden Kinney, Sr., lived there at that time.)

"The wolf came along and was at once set upon by all the dogs that were present. They soon brought it to bay in a corner of the worm fence. In spite of all they could do, the dogs failed to dislodge the wolf, but were severely slashed every time they got in reach of its murderous fangs. At last Davis noticed the animal’s tail protruding from a crack in the fence, whereupon he proceeded to get a firm handhold on that member, while Kinney got an axe and started to help the dogs.

After having one leg badly lacerated, Kinney dealt the blow which brought Sir Wolf to his untimely end."

In the 1861 formation of the Statehood of West Virginia, on the list of delegates from Doddridge County was one S. S. Kinney. Ref. #6.

Tyler County personal property appraisement of the estate of James Jarvis, deceased, dated 11 November 1826, names Benjamin Sayre as administrator. SOLOMON MOSESSAYRE was born 30 March 1799 in Monongalia County, (West) Virginia. He married (by Zebulon Maxwell) 15 August 1821 in Harrison County, Virginia, LYDIA DAVIS who was born 23 June 1799 at Salem, then Harrison County to James and Elizabeth (Davis) Davis. (Harrison County Marriage Book 1, page 123.) Benjamin’s brother, #553 Jedediah’s son born in May 1799 was also named, Solomon. In 1831, Solomon M. Sayre and family moved to Clark County, Ohio, and lived there through 1835. In 1836, they moved to Shelby County, Ohio and settled on section 17, Jackson Township, where they lived the remainder of their married lives. The Seventh Day Baptists organized their society at the home of Solomon Sayre on 3 September 1840. The Davises operated the first grist mill in Jackson Township known as Davis Horse-Mill.

    DAVIS

The Rev. William Davis was born in Glamorganshire, Wales in 1663. He came to America in 1684 and settled in William Penn’s Colony. He married 1st about 1685, Elizabeth Brisley. He married 2nd, Elizabeth Pavior. He died late in the year 1745 at Shrewsbury, New Jersey. Elizabeth (Pavior) Davis died at Middletown, New Jersey in 1760. William fathered at least eleven children.

James Davis, son of William, was born about 1720. He married at Westerly, Rhode Island, 10 January 1740 Judith Maxson who was born 17 September 1720 to Joseph and Bethia Maxson. She died 14 May 1773. He died 26 June 1778. They had six children.

William Davis, son of James, was born at Shrewsbury, New Jersey 11 March 1754. He married about 1773 Elizabeth Havens who was born in Shrewsbury, New Jersey about 1754.

According to tradition, early in Revolutionary War time, William worked in his father’s shipyard. They had been Loyalists until their shipyard was burned by the British. After that incident, William took his family to his wife’s parents home, joined the colonists and fought for the American cause.

In 1789, they migrated to Washington County, Pennsylvania where they lived two and one half years, then in 1792 to Harrison County, Virginia, where they lived 38 years before going to Ohio. This was learned from a pension record. William bought all the bottom land east of Salem, (West) Virginia, where the settlement of Bristol formed, and by doing so acquired the nickname Bottom Billy. William served one time as Sheriff of Harrison County. William and Elizabeth had eleven children.

About 1833, William and his wife, and several of their children with families migrated to Clark County, Ohio. It was believed that she died in Clark County and he in Shelby County.

James Davis, son of William, was born 1 April 1774 in New Jersey. He married 8 September 1795 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia, Elizabeth Davis who was born 10 May 1781 in New Jersey to Rev. Jacob and Mary Davis. He died 13

June 1851 and she died 22 April 1857 at Jackson Center, Shelby, Ohio. James and Elizabeth had ten children. Their daughter, Lydia, married Solomon Sayre, son of Benjamin and Nancy (Tucker) Sayre. Ref. #3

Lydia’s father, James Davis, died 13 June 1851 at the age of 77. Lydia died 7 February 1866 in Jackson Township, Shelby, Ohio. In 1868, Solomon purchased 40-acres in Farina, Illinois and tried to farm it. After the death of his son, Lewis, he gave it up and returned to
