Running his fingers through his hair – or, at least, attempting to, for he’d only had his dark locks trimmed earlier that very day – Luke sighed and leaned back in his seat, knees apart with the briefcase tucked between his shiny black shoes. He didn’t like those shoes, just like he didn’t like his new haircut, cropped too close around his ears, but he still needed to wear both of them like a face a woman put on every morning.

No, there were many, many clothes he’d rather be wearing than business attire, but a man – even a gay man – had to move on from bartending work at some point in his life. If, of course, he wanted to succeed, that was. And, so, Luke had dutifully taken a day off from work on a zero hours contract, which he’d still had to beg and plead to find someone to cover for, to go on an interview for a trainee management position. After all, he had supervisory experience from the bar and who was better there at juggling multiple tasks and people all in the middle of a late night rush, music pounding and throats thirsty for more than him there?

He sighed heavily and closed his eyes against the rattle of the underground train carriage, the sway and grind throwing his stomach into a distinct sense of unease. Of course, it had been an absolute disaster. Just what good did he think he was taking on a management position? Even though it had been clearly stated that no experience was required for the role, he’d found himself landed smack bang in the middle of a group interview that was more of a sales pitch than anything else. And, when he’d tried to extricate himself from the throng, making good his excuses, they hadn’t even let him leave.
