    H ow does it feel to be a monster?

    Frozen I found myself staring at the thirty-year old lawyer facing me. His dark brown eyes focused on me, picking me out of a group of men entering the room. None of us wore uniforms and he couldn’t have possibly known who I was. But he did.

    The younger man sat quietly on the old leather chair nobody ever used. A cup of tea stood before him which he hadn’t touched yet. He looked out of place somehow in the clothes someone gave him. His were at the forensic lab.

    Patrick Finch was pale as a sheet. Dark rings under his eyes proved his lack of sleep and physical fatigue. He was skinny, with clothes that were at least two sizes too large. Blood was still clearly visible underneath his bitten fingernails. He had buzz cut sandy blonde hair.

    Police officers had processed Finch right after his arrest. He had voluntarily offered a DNA-sample, taken off his clothes without their help and didn’t refuse when they medically examined him for injuries. Finally, they swabbed his hands and fingernails. He had never complained about anything, cooperating meekly with everyone without saying a single word. For a while, some thought he was mute.

    At times, so they told me, it seemed as if he didn’t really know what was going on. He dwelled in the back of his confused mind, refusing to stare anyone in the face as they tried to figure him out. His attention span was all over the place.
