    PREFACE

The answer to the question if the foundation be destroyed, what can the righteous do? (Psalm 11:3) doesn't always come easily. This is because it's easier to destroy than to build up. Sadly, this age-long poser has found expression in the sacred institution of marriage and there are no ready answers popping up. Today, more than ever, the world, and even sadder, the church, has seen a divorce rate that's beyond compare with any other time in human history. The question is: what went wrong? The Psalmist helps us with a perfect diagnosis: the foundation has been destroyed .

Today, the lines have been blurred when it comes to differentiating God's standard for marriage and the world's standards. The order of Adam (a man leaving father and mother to be joined with his chosen woman to become one flesh) has been bastardized and mutilated beyond recognition. Now, men want to marry men and women want to marry women. Worse still, humans are now marrying animals and other non-living objects. Sodom and Gomorrah must have been a rehearsal! But that extreme is not what this book about. The effort here is geared towards redirecting the attention of the church and the sane remnant of the earth of the failsafe path to marital happiness in a world where such is fast becoming premium. The idea is to indicate or reinstall the ancient landmarks of marriage as divinely ordained by God and expressed in His word.

From the very first sentence of the first chapter to the last of the concluding chapter, I have made the effort to provide sound scriptural precepts for pursuing a happy married life. To drive these principles home however, the subject is treated to a very large extent within a cultural context, especially because, beyond being biblical, the idea of parental concept is held very dearly in the traditional African setting in which we find ourselves.

Furthermore, emphasis is placed on the role of the church in guiding the process that can produce successful marriages, particularly the tradition of courtship, medical compatibility and keeping the bed undefiled. Clearly, there has been a failing in such duties within the body of Christ as many church leaders have comprised biblical standards and substituted same with 'accommodating standards'.

This small book therefore comes as a timely reminder of what is God's standard for marriage - the process leading to it and all the essential ingredients to make it work. Of course, there might be areas which you may find debatable when placed against the backdrop of what you have been taught in the past, but
