    Dakota!

The dragon growled, heavy brows lowering worriedly over his sharp, yellow eyes as he leapt into the barn, ducking behind a stack of hay bales as if they would, somehow, conceal his bulk from wandering eyes. Despite his best efforts, his tail stuck out the side and he cursed in his own language as he tried to wrap it around himself, tucking it out of the way. His tan and brown scales were dirtied by the dust of the dry season, the ranch and plains not having seen a spot of moisture in many months. Although the cattle were grazing what they could, the ranchers were kept busy moving them to fresh pastures, all the while keeping one eye on the horizon for the promise of a brewing storm cloud.

That alone was the only reason Umbia had been able to sneak back onto the ranch from which he’d been chased with a shotgun (not an uncommon occurrence among the ranches, it had to be said) while the men at work were elsewhere. It was a risky endeavour indeed but there was someone he had to see and something he had to do before he left in search of a new job. It was a shame from the work side too as he’d rather enjoyed the manual labour and herding cattle from the air, although the sheep had posed him more of an issue.

But humans would be humans and dragons would be dragons at the end of the day. There would forever be a line between their species, both having hunted the other in times perhaps not all that long gone by. The line would always be there in a hard stare or the flash of razor sharp teeth – or even in the sight down the barrel of a gun.

There was only one line, however, that Umbia yearned to cross.

Peering over the bales, he cast about warily for anyone other than his sweetheart,
