Introduction
In Milcha Sanchez-Scott's one-act play Dog Lady (1984), a young woman, Rosalinda, dreams of escaping the barrio as she trains for a marathon. When her neighbor, an ineffable but powerful healer, decides to help her, Rosalinda's quest for glory becomes a wild chase as she is given the dog spirit—a benign but chaotic enchantment that makes her run like the wind. Included in the Best Short Plays of 1986, Dog Lady was first produced at INTAR in New York City, from April 27 to May 27, 1984. With a cast of lovable, funny characters and positive themes, Dog Lady encourages its audience to seek the good in others in order to build a stronger community and brighter future. The play appears in Dog Lady and The Cuban Swimmer, Dramatists Play Service, 1984.
Author Biography
Sanchez-Scott Was Born In Bali, Indonesia, In 1953, To A Colombian Father And Indonesian, Dutch, And Chinese Mother. She Spent Her Childhood In Colombia, Mexico, And England, Where She Was Educated At A Catholic Girls' School Outside Of London. The Family Moved To La Jolla, California, When Sanchez-Scott Was Fourteen. There, She Encountered Marked Racial Prejudice For The First Time While Waiting For The School Bus On Her First Day When A White Boy Threw Rocks At Her And Told Her To Wait At The Mexican Bus Stop. Because Of This Incident, Her Parents Enrolled Her In An Episcopalian Girls' School.
Sanchez-Scott attended the University of San Diego, where she studied literature, theater, and philosophy. After graduation, she worked at an employment agency for household workers in Beverly Hills and as an actress, including roles in the television series Police Story and Starsky and Hutch. It was while performing in a women's prison that Sanchez-Scott was inspired to write the stories of the struggling immigrant women in her life. Her first play, Latina, was produced in Los Angeles in 1980. A critical success, Latina launched Sanchez-Scott's career as a playwright.
Susan Lowenberg, the producing director of the new works division of Artists in Prison and Other Places, commissioned Sanchez-Scott to write a second play. The
