"I have had the honor of working with Sonia during my tenure as the Health Promotion & Childbirth Education Coordinator and now the Level II Dept. Secretary at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. She is the utmost professional, very compassionate and respectful of all patients and their families as well as her coworkers. My husband and I had the blessing of her assistance during my mother-in-law's illness and passing - we could not have survived without Sonia's help. Sonia has always responded enthusiastically to my calls for volunteers to work in the community. Evaluations from those who participated always loved her knowledge and enthusiasm. She is a blessing and joy to work with."

Preface
What Do Humans Need?
To Be Happy.
To Do No Harm.
To Think New In Each Moment.
I can only speak from my own experience as a nurse and caregiver. These are my insights to live a life, as a caregiver, with balance and focus. These principles reflect my results and the results of my students. When you study this book, I believe you will transform your life.
Try the principles out for yourself, as if your life depended on it. Think about what you want in caring for yourself and others. Feel good now, about this optimal caring, whenever you think about it. Whatever works for you, just keep doing it. Throw away whatever doesn’t work for you.
I know I may be biased, however, when it comes to being a caregiving this may be the most important book you have ever read. I understand this is a bold statement.
The reality is, this book provides the missing link between your desire for happiness and your achievement of happiness. You may have listened to CDs or gone to courses to learn caregiving systems. For most people they have a burst of energy and then glide right back to status quo.
These simple principles are the tools to unlock your happiness thermostat. In these pages you will understand the root cause for happiness and success or failure and begin changing your future for the better.
You will learn how to be happy, do happy, and have happiness. You will learn how to do no harm. Best of all, you will learn how to think fresh in every moment and be an excellent caregiver for yourself and others.
SO what is my experience and where am I coming from? Like many of you, I had a lot of potential with little to show for it. As a child I really, really, really wanted to prove that being happy without hurting others was possible. I wanted to be able to think freshly regarding each new situation. I worked very hard for many years.
Becoming a nurse was a step in the right direction for many reasons. Learning about and understanding the value of systems, humans, and separating thinking and feelings were huge milestones.
In addition, my hospice experience was the key for me to understand the connection to spirit, clarifying the importance of being present within the doing of life. The fears slowly began to peel away, as I learned from my patients and clients how to be happy, even during illness and at death. Children and adults, alike, seemed able to be grateful in the present moment. I learned everything I could about health, happiness and the inner working of the heart and mind.
I discovered that happy people routinely think differently. I became aware of how my own thoughts were holding me back. Finally, I was ready to get off the roller coaster of ups and downs. I committed to be consistently happy, no matter what.
People often ask me how do I get so much energy and why am I always so happy. Teaching hundreds of students, I have learned that having the tools is not enough. Without the commitment and system to stay on track many people, including myself remained stuck.
