    THE TRAGEDY OF ETHALIA

    ACT 1

    Scene 1

    NARRATOR

It was a day of sorrow, a day of pain, a day of passion, and a day of disappointment. The city of Bion was once again consumed by darkness, and one couldn’t help but fear the worst for family and friends. It was also a day when one had to search carefully for safety, because everything and everyone, even the strongest among us, were targets. On foot I dashed, hiding away from the heartless men who killed for pleasure. The city of Bion was in terrible shape, especially the castle; corpses everywhere littered the roads like grains of sand form the desert. And the amount of blood on its floor only made it worse of a nightmare. But we all know men rise and fall, and fall and rise. Fortunately for citizens of Bion and Bandit, there were heroes of all genders and all ages. Among them were the bravest of all—Calisto and Ethalia.

ALEXANDER (walking through the garden with Calisto)

So the princess visits the garden every morning?

    CALISTO

    Yeah.

    ALEXANDER (laughs at Calisto)

Are you certain this is not a dream or a tale, Prince?

    CALISTO

Seriously Alex, why waste precious time seeking a glance of the tale’s character?

    ALEXANDER

Well, I see neither fairies nor a Princess, my friend. Perhaps we are to look for this tale’s character?

    CALISTO

We cannot just look for the Princess; we must have reason.

    ALEXANDER

I suppose your heart’s feeling is not reason enough?

    CALISTO

Don’t be foolish, my friend. My heart tells tales of love to the noblest and purest heart that lives.

    ALEXANDER

Perhaps you should study the recitation of poems as well. Now, let’s find this Princess before your heart stops telling tales.

    CALISTO

    Find her? Where?

    ALEXANDRA

The castle. She does live at the castle, does she not?

    CALISTO

You’re out of your bloody mind, Alex. Perhaps you do not know what a castle is. There are guards with swords and armor, you know.

    ALEXANDER (sarcastically)

Oh, don’t tell me you’re afraid of your own home—your own castle! Are you?

    CALISTO

Afraid? No, my friend, but we are Bandits; we’re not welcome in that castle.

    ALEXANDER

Well then, from this moment, I am no citizen of Bandit; I am Sir Alexander, a traveler who merely lost his way.

    CALISTO (laughs)

You don’t expect the Queen to believe such lies, do you? Then again, you would probably be dead before you could have the honor of seeing the Queen!

    ALEXANDER

Well, I’d rather death than to live and watch you go mad over some fairytale Princess. Frankly, it’s unbearable.

    CALISTO

I’d rather go mad than to see my dearest friend
