Introduction
26330.jpgThe great gift of life
It’s a boy! It’s a girl! And it’s celebrations galore as we welcome the new bundle of joy into the cosmos. Even if the birth of your child was not planned, somehow you can’t escape noticing the miracle that it is to conspire with the universe to bring forth another living, breathing little human. The moment that a newborn comes into this world is special. It is special because it is new, and all new things are special to us. Special too, because it is a beginning: the beginning of so many more years of life to this wonderful little being that we behold. It is the beginning of a journey that will be filled with joy and wonderful memories or a belaboured and robotic existence that will be fraught with fatigue and apathy. The journey will be determined, to a large extent, by the designer of the map that the child shall follow as he tries to make his way in the world.
The child is now in your hands. And guess what? The pen to draft the map is as well.
Gifts to our children
The first gift that we give to our children is that of birth. Thereafter, we give many more. Our goal: to make our children happy.
We spare no resources when it comes to getting gifts for our children. We invest considerable time in identifying the perfect present. We rush to beat deadlines of birthdays and holidays.
These material things we give are symbols of the immense love we have for our children. They signify how much we wish them happiness and satisfaction. They attest to the fact that, as parents, our children’s happiness is ours too.
And so as the years advance, our children have much to show for the gifts we have given them: photos where they are playing with their favourite toys, hobbies developed from using some of these gifts, book collections, wardrobes that make a statement, logbooks of cars, certificates of sponsored courses, and title deeds of properties.
All good, but do these really guarantee a lifetime of happiness?
How do we give gifts that matter? In the first place, which gifts matter?
The most important of gifts are those things that we can’t touch and where there are no certificates to confirm what we have bequeathed. They are gifts of being. They are the things that we pass on to our children that make them live fully and enjoy the journey of life, rather than merely exist and then die. Most of the time we are not even aware that we are giving these gifts or denying them because these are gifts that we bequeath simply
