I would like to thank my friends and talented colleagues for their support in this project. Thanks in particular to Nick Poirier for those long talks we always have in brainstorming ideas and to Peter Markley for going over my work and coming up with some new interesting ideas.
It always has been hard to learn history and to learn the mistakes from the past. To learn what our ancestors have done that has led us to this point in time. One of those times involved the final war that will ever be waged on Earth. The death toll was staggering since billions of people have been killed from the beginning until the end of the war.
Make no mistake; this is not a story of heroism or the classic story of good and evil. This is a story of tragedy. A tragedy about how we had nearly lost everything in the war. This is a story that needs to be remembered and to honor the men and women who willing gave their lives to protect the human race. It has been too long since we have been told our history and too long we conveniently forget them when we go to war. This is a story about the last war on Earth that will forever determine the fate of Humanity…
…A good place to start was the day when I was promoted to Brigadier General. I was surprised and excited about the promotion on that day. My superiors and my men had conspired together to host a celebration party to commemorate my promotion. My wife and I attended the celebration and we had left our kids at home under the watchful eye of our oldest daughter, Agatha. But it was also the day that I had discovered about the unspeakable dangers that would forever shatter my world…
April 15th, 2164 A.D.
The ballroom was filled with festive music and the sounds of people chattering away as they all waited for the man of the hour to come. Everyone knew this celebration was long in the coming and had waited, rather impatiently, for the promotion to come through. They all knew he was an outstanding officer who was constantly awarded many times for his bravery and his courage. However, given the fact that there were more generals than there were soldiers because of World War V, they all knew that it could take a long time before he would be promoted to the rank of Brigadier. With so many soldiers dead and the military desperately trying to increase their enrollment, they have done hardly anything to make room for advancement for the other soldiers and officers who had managed to survive. Therefore, it was a great surprise for everyone that Praxton received this promotion.
It has been seven years after World War V had ended and it still feels like it would take decades before they can fully recover. With so many men and women dead, the military was greatly depleted of its pool of soldiers. It was one of the bloodiest wars they have ever fought that lasted for eight years against China and her allies. Just about every nation around the world was decimated economically, militarily, and from the damages because of the war effort. Not to mention that many soldiers who have fought and survived the war became more ruthless and harsher. Only very few soldiers and officers barely changed during the course of the war, though the price they paid were having nightmares of what happened.
The newly promoted Brigadier General Eric Praxton walked inside the ballroom with his wife, Erica. I hate parties. Why couldn’t we go to that concert instead? It’s not like anyone would miss us,
Praxton mumbled quietly to his wife.
Every time he attends to one of these ceremonies, something bad always happened to him. Like the first time he went to a party such as this, he made such an ass of himself from a dare his friends had given him and like a young moron; he did it. The end result was when he was caught completely naked while trying to go into building after building so he could put some clothes on. Eventually, he did found one such building unlocked, but ended up pepper sprayed and tasered by his future wife and her friend. They thought he was some pervert or a rapist and they didn’t believe him when he said he was in the military. Naturally, they called the police and the police later called in the military. Ever since then, his friends and, on occasion, Erica, would tease him about the whole ordeal. The only good thing that came of it was that he met her and later married her. Nevertheless, the other times he had attended to these sorts of parties, something unexpected would happen in a bad way.
And here he was, attending to another party honoring his promotion. His wife, instead of answering him, gave him a slight slap on his hand and gave him a look he knew all too well. To most people, her look may look affectionate, but deep down she was giving him a stern expression. She, along with his superiors, had insisted he should attend to this party despite the fact that he wanted to avoid it as much as possible. But, apparently, there is no escaping from this. Praxton really hated it when everyone gangs up on him and force him to do something he did not want to do like going to this party.
When people began taking notice of his presence in his newly promoted uniform, they started to clap and yell out their congratulations to him. Praxton smiled politely as he could lest he get another look from his wife and raised his hand in acknowledgement of their praise and support. Praxton had to admit his new promotion was a surprise to him when he came into the command center to start his duty shift when he noticed a bunch of his officers were standing in full attention with Generals Costner and Albright standing in the middle with smiles on their faces. Praxton stood where he was; dumbfounded at what the occasion was about, when General Costner announced Praxton’s promotion to Brigadier General.
It was a shock then and it still felt like a shock now as he repeatedly said, Thank you,
over the cacophony of applauses and people shouting out their praise and support. As the applause and the shouting started to wane, everyone surrounded Praxton and his wife to offer their personal congratulations. Erica clung herself tightly around Praxton’s arm as if she didn’t want to be separated from him while everyone shook his hand and patted his shoulder. As Praxton looked beyond the hordes of people, he spotted one of the chief architects that are responsible for throwing this party: First Lieutenant Kyle. The lieutenant saw Praxton looking at him and he was pretending to look innocent, but Praxton knew better.
Kyle was a model officer and one of the few that were not affected too much by the last war. Namely because his father was a senator who pulled some strings to ensure he wouldn’t be fighting in the front lines despite the fact that during much of the war, just about everywhere in the world was a front line. Though the attacks on the United States didn’t occur quite as heavily as other parts of the world, the fact remains that there have been numerous attacks on the U.S., mostly on the West coast and on the U.S./Mexico border. What Praxton knew of the man, Kyle had joined the military against the wishes of his father because he had hoped to serve in something that was bigger than he was. As much as the man had hoped to serve in the front lines and wanted no
