Preface
Maternal mortality has barely improved in the last thirty years. This is in spite of cutting-edge technology and trillions of dollars invested. The global maternal mortality ratio (that is the number of maternal deaths per one hundred thousand live births) declined by only 2.3 percent between 1990 and 2008, and over one thousand pregnant or recently post-partum women die daily from pregnancy-related complications. Most of these deaths could have been prevented if the simple concepts discussed in this book were applied.
From my medical tutelage in Nigeria, to my mission trips in Ethiopia, and now in modern America practicing full-spectrum family medicine, I have seen a needless waste of pregnant women’s lives from inadvertent and preventable causes—but it doesn’t have to be this way. If the three hundred fifty-eight thousand women, who died following pregnancy or childbirth in 2008, had access to the information in this book many would still be alive today!
This book covers the entire nine-month pregnancy and teaches mothers-to-be how to apply simple, down-to-earth principles, laced with medical pearls, and avoid the common pitfalls many make in pregnancy.
Foreword
I am one of the oldest family medicine doctors still delivering babies and taking night calls. I was an academically tenured professor for over twenty years, but I started a bilingual private practice in 1999. Our focus is family care including obstetrics. The need and opportunity for obstetrical family medicine is so great that, even in an over-doctored American urban area, our coalition of family physicians in private practice has grown to over two thousand deliveries per year. But it took the political support of the Dean and Chair to achieve our hospital privileges. If you can unlock these, there is a bright future for obstetrical family medicine and the material included in this book by Dr. Momah.
