    INTRODUCTION

    In my opinion, one of our greatest struggles as a people has been identifying who we are. We, as a people of color, have allowed other ethnic groups to identify who we are, which has caused a great deal of pain and suffering in America. Our race has an identity crisis that has evolved into being identified by many names. These names include Negro, nigger, colored, black, just to name a few, and in recent times included the name African American.

    America, being what it is—a melting pot of cultures and traditions, has made us as a people look at, analyze, and address our various traditions and cultural challenges that are seen through the eyes of people of other ethnic cultures.
