Foreword
The world needs more leaders. It doesn’t need more positions of leadership. It doesn’t need more people in seats of authority in businesses, government, religious institutions, schools, or the media. The world needs leaders; people who know how to discipline themselves for growth and service of others. Leaders are people who are serving a cause greater than their own individual interests. The world needs more leaders.
Many books, articles, and seminars claim to be books about leadership; but in actuality these do not teach leadership. They teach management skills or provide suggestions for people to improve on a personal basis. My hope is that this book will inspire you to take the path of leadership. Leadership is a challenging journey. A journey where one will meet with several difficulties and challenges which entails personal sacrifices and discipline. But in spite of that, the reward garnered from leadership outweighs the pain and sacrifices. Leadership is about making an impact on the world around you. John Maxwell’s moniker is that leadership is influence.
Leaders influence others.
The authors of this book have experienced the great reward of being people of influence. They have penned these pages in order to inspire you to start down the path of leadership. If you desire to impact others, be an influencer, and reap the rewards of a diligent and disciplined life then this book will provide you with wisdom for the race. Leaders are not simply born. They are developed over the long haul; a journey of growth, perseverance, and influence.
Begin your leadership journey today.

Preface
Welcome! My name is Nelson David Bassey – you can call me David. Sarah, Loges and I wrote this book. I don’t know how you got it. Maybe a friend gave it to you, or maybe you bought it with your own money because the title caught your eye. Regardless of how it landed in your hands, we’re really glad it did. Now you just need to read it. It’s great you’ve started already. So let’s get back to the book.
Recently, I was privileged to meet a professional financial planner and one of the top practitioners in the profession certified in Malaysia. My team and I invited him for a talk at my university. After the session while walking him over to his car, he told me quite subtly in our discussion, David, you know I’d rather employ someone with the right set of leadership qualities than a first-class honors graduate with no leadership qualities.
I paused and gave an expression as if to say, Really?
but I didn’t say it. Later, he said, I’ll rather promote an employee who is adding value to my company and bringing ideas that will advance the organization as opposed to the employee who signs in, does his job well, and signs out.
More so, one week earlier, I was speaking with a Talent Manager and the head of leadership at one of the largest corporations in Malaysia, Maxis Berhad, and in our discussion, she mentioned the exact same thing—the incomparable importance of possessing leadership qualities over paper qualification. I believe you, too, may have had similar experiences. So what does this tell us?
The world is changing. New opportunities are constantly emerging. Global competition is skyrocketing, so much so that the graduate with the right certificate for a job is always interrupted and often overtaken by others with the right leadership qualities to learn the skills needed and excel in a given career. To get what you want in life, your dreams and desires, whether it’s a fulfilling job, a business of your own, or making the world a better place, you first need to make a change in your mindset about leadership and embrace it wholeheartedly. Those young people who embrace this change will find themselves beautifully equipped to move forward faster and excel in this present generation and perhaps—who knows?—in the next.
Unfortunately, I have met with so many young people who say, Ah! I am not a leader,
or, Ah … I don’t want to be a leader. Let someone else lead and I’ll just follow.
How often have you heard yourself or others say, I’m not a leader,
or I can’t be a leader
? Remember that the person who is saying, I can’t,
is unconsciously building the very wall that keeps opportunities, true happiness, and greatness just beyond his/her reach. And at the same time, that person is interrupted by someone who is saying, I can,
and is consequently drawing closer to achieving the dreams of his/her life. Over the past two years of my life, I have learned—mostly from experience, personal research, and other people—about the two dimensions of leadership that can help you stand out and set yourself up for success. These two areas include personal leadership
and cooperative leadership
.
On the theory that understanding is half the battle, this book will give you a clear understanding of what leadership really is. Thus, you will be able to free yourself in order to take active steps that can help you become the person you should be, achieve your dreams, and ultimately help others achieve theirs as well. (That’s what we believe in—helping others as we would help ourselves.)
Two years ago, with the understanding that unless I started doing something different, my future would be only a magnified version of what I am today, I started living life differently. I started practicing the first dimension of leadership—personal leadership. This helped me to make a 180-degree turn in the way I think and act, which has brought me from where I was (which I’ll tell you in the following pages) to where I am today. On the other hand, there has not been a greater launching pad or springboard for me than cooperative leadership, which we will discuss in part two of this book.
In the first part of this book, you will learn how you can increase your value and become the best manager of your own life. In the second part, you will learn practical steps how to set yourself on the springboard that can take you to an entirely new level of success. And finally in the last part of this book, you will learn a liberating principle that can release you from the fear of making mistakes or screwing up, which is one of the top fears of young leaders like myself, especially if you have a dream you’re pursuing. Amazing! You will also find at the back of this book the SCI Secret Notes. The questions in this secret note are meant to help you easily navigate through the key principles and ideas in every chapter and recap on the lessons learned along the way.
In The New Generation of Leadership, you’ll find the benefits of my personal experience and that of the books, tapes, and interviews (across America, Asia, Africa, and Europe) that Sarah, Loges and I have accumulated over the past years. We are strong believers in the truth that unless you start doing something different today, your future will be only a magnified version of what you are today. Hence, we have written this book as an action guide that will help you take simple baby steps to create the kind of person and future you desire for yourself.
Furthermore, through his critical revisions and scrutiny, Rajasvaran Logeswaran (‘Loges’), has ensured that you find every page of The New Generation of Leadership a useful guide to success in your career and in other areas of your life. Apart from standing out as an example of the success that can be gained by practicing the principles in this book, Loges has been an educator for over fifteen years, and knows what it means, as well as what is needed to move from ordinary and timid (a student near the bottom of his class in his early education), to achieving outstanding career success. Loges is Dean at a university, became a full Professor by the age of 38, an officer in the volunteer forces, an executive committee member and Senior Member of an international professional engineering society, a committee member of his residential management body, a chairman and advisor of several other committees within the university as well as an adjunct staff of another university. Recognition of his accomplishments are even included in several international listings including Marquis Whos’ Who and the International Biographical Centre. Loges believes that this book, although aimed at young people, will benefit people of any age looking to improve on their leadership skills.
What’s more? Sarah Michel, a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) and a networking expert who helps people increase their netWORTH® by investing in their network, will lay for you practical steps to help you perfect networking with anyone anywhere at any time. Living in a world where everything is connected to everything, there is only so much we can do without networking with others. Thus, in chapter five, Sarah will outline what you need to know and do to effectively network with others.
And yes, The New Generation of Leadership is a book that can transform ordinary young people into outstanding and growing leaders.
Introduction
Today, we live in a world furnished with all kinds of opportunities—much more than you are likely to realize—to do just about anything we want with our lives, both good and bad, and unfortunately, that itself is a problem. Oftentimes, as young people, we have dreams and want to believe deep down in
