    Preface

M y Humble Gratitude to the Universe!

I am grateful for the countless, priceless gifts in my life.

How beautiful it is to stay in the moment. It is such a refreshing feeling, and it does restore me. My past and future fear could blur my vision, and it does kill brain cells too.

Now my gratitude became my daily ritual, and it took several years to develop. Staying in the moment makes me relax and calm and provides me the vision to see beauty in anything. Just from my immediate surroundings, I can see and feel how much we are granted.

I did live for several years in those darkest corners in my past life. Those past darkest corners became a brighter place now, and it made me humble and strong in my faith.

I hope this book will give hope and inspiration to those women who are struggling for a better and peaceful life. Never give up; trust the universe.

    Acknowledgments

I thank my daughter who inspired, encouraged, and supported me to accomplish this heavy-duty task.

I thank my granddaughter who is my motivation. She gives me energy and immunity, and I am learning from her to be a fully human being, not to just to survive but also to thrive with the gift of life.

I also thank my best friend, RR, a writer who already wrote several books, and her books were published by same the publisher. She inspired me how she does all these!

My RC support group was always there for me to support me, if I need a shoulder to lean on. Special appreciation to the police and fire departments of the town where I lived and raised my daughter, and those people who will read my book, they are/were my lifeline.

    Prologue

M y respected father was a learned man, a man of piety and forbearance. Day and night, people received favors from him. You could always hear conversation on leaning and literature in our home. Because of my tender age, most of the talk would be beyond my comprehension. He was the president of Ahle Sunnat Wal-Jama’t of Bombay province. He would be extremely busy. I was youngest of all my siblings and I was minor. First, I was taught Persian and in those tender years I was taught a number of easy Persian books. I was hardly ten when my father passed away. Older siblings turned away from me. My father saved a fair amount of money with one of his disciples and a dear friend in my name. The money turned to be greatly useful for me. After much wrangling with my brothers, he sent me to Punjab where I received higher education. Alongside, I wrote poetry and essays.

Two years ago, my house caught a fire in which hundreds of educational and literary books, some manuscripts, scores of magazines and newspapers bearing my poems (nazams, ghzals) and essays were destroyed. Whatever could be saved is presented here. Finally, I wish to thank Sabir bin Zauqi who not only did a beautiful work of calligraphy but also favored with many valuable suggestions. Kind calligraphers like him are rare.

    CHAPTER 1

    Family Origin

M y father was born in Hyderabad. He has a degree in herbal medicine from Nadwa University in India. He has a mixed heritage. His father’s family was very noble and highly educated, from the city of Medina, from the Syed ¹ family, and they were Naqshbandia. My grandfather’s name was Syed Sahebzada Ahemad Shah Naqshband. ² He traveled and lived in Uzbekistan, Samarkand, and Bukhara and did Islamic study in Maderasa ³ in Central Asia, which at that time was the center for Islamic study. Finally, he graduated from the most famous university in Egypt, the Al-Azhar University in Cairo. He was offered the position as an ulama/mufti e azam ⁴ (attorney general) by the ruler of Hyderabad.

Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan was the seventh ruler of the Asif Jahi Dynasty. In 1724, Nizam-ul-Mulk Asif Jah 1 and seven generations of the family ruled the Deccan for 224 years up to 1948 (www.hyderabad.co.uk). In Osmania University in Hyderabad, India, he was posted with full services besides other wonderful benefits, such as living in a mansion, having buggies and nannies, and so on. Most of the time, the Nizam of Hyderabad would have tea with my grandfather every afternoon.

At that time, Hyderabad was the richest state in India and was ruled by the seven generations of Nizams⁵ for 224 years, from 1724 to 1948. The Nizam’s era saw the growth of Hyderabad economically, which is also rich culturally, and electricity, railways, roads, universities, and hospitals developed. The last, seventh ruler, Mir Osman Ali Khan, donated generously in India as well abroad.

My father and his sibling were educated in universities. But before they were educated in universities, they were homeschooled by a professional Persian teacher. They completed their Persian classic study of Bostan, which was written by Sheikh Saadi.

My older aunt was a teacher in a government school in Karachi, Pakistan. She worked there until she retired. My younger aunt was a well-known writer and poet. One of her books in Persian was about how to learn the Persian language and its grammar for beginners, which was well known. It was entitled Farsi Adab and was
