Foreword

This book of daily biblical reflections presents to the reader a psalm, a scripture passage, a reflection, a verse of a hymn, and a prayer. Those who set aside a specific period of time each day of ten to fifteen minutes to use this book will find it resourceful and inspiring. In this book Canon Percival indirectly encourages his readers to learn, practice and master the art of reflective reading.

Isaiah 58:8-12

As I begin this year today, I am confident in my heart that my Lord will be my Jehovah Jireh. This is the confidence I must display if I am to trust God all the way to the end. He has made His promises for me in His Holy Word, and I believe none of His promises will ever fail.

There is the assurance that God does all things well. Whenever things seem lost and destroyed, my God will bring blessings. Oh, yes there will be joys, failures and successes this year, maybe even more than last year, yet He will carry me through.

I cannot forecast individual experiences, because I cannot see one step in front of me; but my provider calls me to enter this New Year with a heart full of trust. So I have put away all anxieties and fears knowing that my God will provide.

I don’t know about tomorrow

I just live from day to day

I don’t borrow from its sunshine

For its skies may turn to gray

I don’t worry o’er the future

For I know what Jesus said

And today I’ll walk beside Him

For He knows what is ahead.

My life is a diary in the hand of my God. He is fully aware of my ways and good deeds over the years. It is my desire to be a sacrificial lamb on His altar, so that more good will result from the pages of this life at His coming.

As a sacrificial lamb, my life will write its own record of Christ. As a tablet on His table the way forward will be written for His treasured soul.

God will never forget anything that I do. His justice will indicate any error when He sits on His judgement throne to reveal everything. Yes! My humble service or my neglect of opportunities will be all before Him.

You don’t have to worry

And don’t you be afraid

Joy comes in the morning

Troubles they don’t last always

For there’s a friend in Jesus

Who will wipe your tears away

I am growing into the life of Him who is my flesh and blood; and whose strength gives the sustenance of life to keep me fully disciplined into the blessed peace and kingdom of God.

My Christian faith can never be solid if I am not walking daily in this pilgrimage. The Holy Spirit is the one who will direct my path so that God’s truth will grow within me.

The humble beginning at my mother’s knee afforded me religious knowledge, and too, that which my church and neighbours preached to me, through their actions and in attitudes have all assisted me to this day.

Other glorious things that are beyond what have been, I must grasp. It is that Word of Christ, which must get into my heart that will transform me to accomplish His purpose.

I am anxious about my assignment, though I have no idea of what it is God has for me to do; or what place He wants me to fill. Yet my whole aim is to do well the work of the present time.

There are some persons who for an entire year do nothing of consequence; they spend much time wondering what God would have them do. This is idleness, for God did not promise to show anyone His life-work.

God’s divine plan is in doing His will each day. This is achieved when one surrenders to Him on a daily basis. Be available for His use whatever the purpose. It may be a large or small task. He will bring you to it at the right time. Remember it is His mission, not yours.

Not mine, not mine, the choice

In things or great or small,

Be Thou my guide, my strength

My wisdom and my all.

I believe God will show His face when I touch Him in prayer today, so that I can have vision and glory. It is this mood that will bring His gifts to sustain my weak nature and transform me into His likeness.

Continual blessings from God flow through a series of prayers especially during busy and harassed times of trial. Facing his struggle, Jacob held an all night Prayer Meeting and God responded by giving him a new being. The end product of his crowded day was peace and brotherly love between himself and Esau.

It is in those quiet moments that one really grows spiritually. Somewhere in every difficult moment, a little silent time with God brings heaven to one’s level and provides the strength for service.

Scripture reminds me that Christ feels every grief, every struggle and sympathizes with me all the way. These are not empty words, and the Master is not trying to fool His children. Their meanings are demonstrated in the life of those with whom He identified Himself in the past.

Whatever hurts one of God’s children, Christ always will apply His cooling Power to cool. Sorrow stirs His compassion. The cries of distress go to the depth of His soul. His heart is still the same.

The angels that are crowding around Him will never hinder a poor sufferer on earth from receiving justice. A sincere penitent heart made in some dark room will reach Him. For that simple prayer will touch the hem
