About this ebook

The power of Gods word is often times hard to explain, because of the influence and wisdom in those words, and the emotions or feeling these words can often provoke within all of us. You need to know and understand that we can trust and believe what God has provided and granted to us, and that by acting upon Gods word and not merely reacting to a situation we will be able to manage our emotions instead of allowing them to manage us. I offer you this piece of personal advice: You only have a lifetime to figure out how you are going to spend eternity. Choose wisely.

    Preface

I’ve always enjoyed using quotes to express feelings or sentiments and have done so most of my life. I’ve quoted authors about such as things as anger, hurt, joy, love, opportunity, planning, resentment, vanity, war and many, many other feelings or sentiments. However, recently I’ve rediscovered my Christian roots and I awoke one morning at 2:10 with the prevailing thought from God. Initially, I thought it was just a dream and I went back to sleep. Only to awaken again, with same driving thought; I immediately wrote down the guidance that I should write a book about scripture verses that coincided with varied feelings and sentiments to share with others. Thus my labor of love is to write this book using quotes to express moods, feelings, and sentiments from the greatest book every written, the Bible. I write this in hope of inspiring and encouraging others in those times of need, or time of joy, or times of thanks, or times of revelation to turn to God for their hope, inspiration, and thanks, because through God all things are possible. I dedicate this book to the one percenters out there, that one percent of the American public who has chosen to serve this country as Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, or Coastguard. You do this (both past and present) so, the other 99 percent of America can enjoy their life, liberties and freedoms. I also dedicate this book to the memory of my grandmother Lilli Olga Kutschman Crissinger, who taught me to appreciate a good book and the value of an education; and to my wife Sharon, who makes my life complete. She has blessed me in so many ways I can’t even begin to thank her. Sharon you truly are my inspiration and my worldly angel!

We have all struggled to find the words to express feelings or sentiments and often times we look to the words and thoughts of others to offer us comfort or express those words or sentiments that we ourselves somehow can’t put into words. We’ve searched through various books, we’ve gone to libraries, we’ve bought books of quotes, and we’ve even Googled to find the right words to express our sentiments. However, we’ve often neglected to look in the one place where you always find the answer and that is the Bible. Therefore, my intent is to offer you alternatives for your quotes using several versions of the Bible as the source for the specific scriptural passage. A citation will follow the verse provided so you know the source.

As I write, I am reminded that the greatest commandment given to us by Jesus. Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. (Matthew 22:37-40 NIV). Similarly, after Jesus’ resurrection as discussed in the Gospel of Mark, we find another great passage. He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. (Mark 16:15 NIV).

My hope and prayer is that you find this book and the scriptures contained within it an inspiration and comfort. I hope this book will help spread the good news of Jesus Christ and that you know God and love him with all your heart and soul, and to love your neighbor as yourself.

Lastly, I hope there are still those among you who value holding a book in your hands and reading from a book. If you adapted to newer technologies, there is a digital version of this as well. Now let’s meditate upon some of God’s words—

    ABHOR

To detest, shudder away from, avert, detest, or loathe. This is when we really dislike something.

I abhor the assembly of evildoers and refuse to sit with the wicked.

    Psalm 26:5 NIV

The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself—the Lord God Almighty declares: I abhor the pride of Jacob and detest his fortresses; I will deliver up the city and everything in it. Amos 6:8 NIV

Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them; neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them; for I am Yahweh their God. Leviticus 26:44 ASV

All my familiar friends abhor me. They whom I loved have turned against me. Job 19:19 ASV

I hate and abhor falsehood. I love your law. Psalms 119:163 ASV

You who say a man shouldn’t commit adultery. Do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? Romans 2:22 ASV

    ABOUND

    To overflow or be plentiful

And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. Exodus 34:6 NIV

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ Philippians 1:9-10 NIV

May God, the giver of hope, fill you with continual joy and peace because you trust in Him—so that you may have abundant hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 WNT

Because of the prevalent disregard of God’s law the love of the great majority will grow cold; Matthew 24:12 WNT

    ABSTINENCE

Simply doing without. Remember this—some things are worth waiting on.

Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, You and your sons must not drink any wine or liquor when you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a permanent law for generations to come. Teach them the difference between what is holy and what is unholy, what is clean and what is unclean.

    Leviticus 10: 8-10 GW

The Lord said to Moses, Speak to the Israelites and tell them: A man or a woman may make a special vow to live as a Nazirite dedicated to the Lord. Nazirites must never drink wine, liquor, vinegar made from wine or liquor, or any kind of grape juice, and they must never eat fresh grapes or raisins. Number 6:1-3 GW

Now you must be careful. Don’t drink any wine or liquor or eat any unclean food. Judges 13:4 GW

Instead, we should write a letter telling them to keep away from things polluted by false gods, from sexual sins, from eating the meat of strangled animals, and from eating bloody meat. Acts 15:20 GW

The right thing to do is to avoid eating meat, drinking wine, or doing anything else that causes another Christian to have doubts.

    Romans 14:21 GW

The Spirit says clearly that in later times some believers will desert the Christian faith. They will follow spirits that deceive, and they will believe the teachings of demons. These people will speak lies disguised as truth. Their consciences have been scarred as if branded by a red-hot iron. They will try to stop others from getting married and from eating certain foods. God created food to be received with prayers of thanks by those who believe and know the truth. 1 Timothy 4:1-3 GW

    ADDICTION

Being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming Your body is a temple of the Lord, and should serve as living sacrifice to him holy and pleasing. Don’t start something like smoking, drugs, or alcohol just because everybody else does it. Don’t become addicted to such things.

Wine [makes people] mock, liquor [makes them] noisy, and everyone under their influence is unwise. Proverbs 20:1 GW

Someone may say, I’m allowed to do anything, but not everything is helpful. I’m allowed to do anything, but I won’t allow anything to gain control over my life. 1 Corinthians 6:12 GW

He must not drink excessively or be a violent person, but he must be gentle. He must not be quarrelsome or love money. 1 Timothy 3:3 GW

Deacons must also be of good character. They must not be two-faced or addicted to alcohol. They must not use shameful ways to make money.

    1 Timothy 3:8 GW

Because a bishop is a supervisor appointed by God, he must have a good reputation. He must not be a stubborn or irritable person. He must not drink too much or be a violent person. He must not use shameful ways to make money. Titus 1:7 GW

Tell older women to live their lives in a way that shows they are dedicated to God. Tell them not to be gossips or addicted to alcohol, but to be examples of virtue. Titus 2:3 GW

    ADOPTION

To take or rear a child of another. Remember there are those who need your love and are often unwanted by others.

Abram said, you have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir. Genesis 15:3 NIV

Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you. So the woman took the baby and nursed him. When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, I drew him out of the water. Exodus 2:9-10 NIV

At length he was cast out, but Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him, and brought him up as her own son. Acts 7:21 WNT

Pure, unstained religion, according to God our Father, is to take care of orphans and widows when they suffer and to remain uncorrupted by this world. James 1:27 GW

But, when the time was fully come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born subject to Law, in order to purchase the freedom of all who were subject to Law, so that we might receive recognition as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of His Son to enter your hearts and cry Abba! Our Father! Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir also through God’s own act.

    Galatians 4:4-7 WNT

Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. Romans 9:4 NIV

And more than that, we ourselves, though we possess the Spirit as a foretaste and pledge of the glorious future, yet we ourselves inwardly sigh, as we wait and long for open recognition as sons through the deliverance of our bodies. Romans 8:23 WNT

For he pre-destined us to be adopted by Himself as sons through Jesus Christ—such being His gracious will and pleasure— Ephesians 1:5 WNT

    ADULTERY

Intimate contact involving at least one married partner. It is a sin that effects more than just the instant gratification of lust.

Never commit adultery. Exodus 20:14 GW (One of the Ten Commandments)

My son, pay attention to my wisdom. Open your ears to my understanding so that you may act with foresight and speak with insight. The lips of an adulterous woman drip with honey. Her kiss is smoother than oil, but in the end she is as bitter as wormwood, as sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet descend to death. Her steps lead straight to hell. She doesn’t even think about the path of life. Her steps wander, and she doesn’t realize it. But now, sons, listen to me, and do not turn away from what I say to you. Stay far away from her. Do not even go near her door. Proverbs 5:1-8 GW

Whoever commits adultery with a woman has no sense. Whoever does this destroys himself. Proverbs 6:32 GW

[Wisdom will] also save you from an adulterous woman, from a loose woman with her smooth talk, who leaves [her husband,] the closest friend of her youth, and forgets her marriage vows to her God. Her house sinks down to death. Her ways lead to the souls of the dead. None who have sex with her come back. Nor do they ever reach the paths of life. So walk in the way of good people and stay on the paths of righteous people.

    Proverbs 2: 16-20 GW

You have heard that it was said, ‘Never commit adultery.’ But I can guarantee that whoever looks with lust at a woman has already committed adultery in his heart. Matthew 5:27-28 GW

I can guarantee that whoever divorces his wife for any reason other than her unfaithfulness is committing adultery if he marries another woman. Matthew 19-9 GW

Adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, cursing, arrogance, and foolishness come from within a person. Mark 7:21 GW

An official asked Jesus, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good except God. You know the commandments: Never commit adultery. Never murder. Never steal. Never give false testimony. Honor your father and your mother. Luke 18:18-20 GW

Spiritual adultery means being unfaithful to God. Read Jeremiah 3

    ADVERSARY

An enemy or opponent. Strive and work hard to have no adversaries and love all people.

The enemy who planted them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the world. The workers are angels— Matthew 13:39 GW

I will give you words and wisdom that none of your enemies will be able to oppose or prove wrong. Luke 21:15 GW

Keep your mind clear, and be alert. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion as he looks for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8 GW

Wounds made by a friend are intended to help, but an enemy’s kisses are too much to bear. Proverbs 27:6 GW

If we go on sinning after we have learned the truth, no sacrifice can take away our sins. All that is left is a terrifying wait for judgment and a raging fire that will consume God’s enemies. Hebrews 10:26-27 GW

    ADVERSITY

Difficult times or a hardship; a struggle. We will all face adversity in our lives no matter how hard we try to avoid it; adversity will happen. Just remember God is there for you and will help you get it through it.

The Lord may give you troubles and hardships. But your teacher will no longer be hidden from you. You will see your teacher with your own eyes. Isaiah 30:20 GW

A friend always loves, and a brother is born to share trouble. Proverbs 17:17 GW

If you faint in a crisis, you are weak! Proverbs 24:10 GW

Do not get overly upset with evildoers. Do not envy wicked people,

    Proverbs 24:19 GW

The frightening day of the Lord is near. It is near and coming very quickly. Listen! Warriors will cry out bitterly on the day of the Lord. That day will be a day of overflowing fury, a day of trouble and distress, a day of devastation and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and overcast skies, a day of rams’ horns and battle cries against the fortified cities and against the high corner towers. Zephaniah 1:14-16 GW

If you will not listen to me and obey all these commands you reject my laws and look at my rules with disgust, if you reject my promise by disobeying my commands, then this is what I will do to you: I will terrorize you with disease and fever. You will suffer from eye problems and depression. You will plant your crops and get nothing because your enemies will eat them. I will condemn you so that you will go down in defeat in front of your enemies. Those who hate you will be your rulers. You will run away even when no one is chasing you. If you still will not listen to me, I will discipline you seven times for your sins. I will crush your arrogance. You will have no rain, and your land will be as hard as cement. You will work hard for nothing because your land will produce no crops and the trees will produce no fruit. Leviticus 26:14-20 GW

Since you are guarded by God’s power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed at the end of time. You are extremely happy about these things, even though you have to suffer different kinds of trouble for a little while now. The purpose of these troubles is to test your faith as fire tests how genuine gold is. Your faith is more precious than gold, and by passing the test, it gives praise, glory, and honor to God. This will happen when Jesus Christ appears again. Although you have never seen Christ, you love him. You don’t see him now, but you believe in him. You are extremely happy with joy and praise that can hardly be expressed in words. 1 Peter 1:5-8 GW

You have forgotten the encouraging words that God speaks to you as his children: My child, pay attention when the Lord disciplines you. Don’t give up when he corrects you. The Lord disciplines everyone he loves. He severely disciplines everyone he accepts as his child. Endure your discipline. God corrects you as a father corrects his children. All children are disciplined by their fathers. If you aren’t disciplined like the other children, you aren’t part of the family. On earth we have fathers who disciplined us, and we respect them. Shouldn’t we place ourselves under the authority of God, the father of spirits, so that we will live? For a short time our fathers disciplined us as they thought best. Yet, God disciplines us for our own good so that we can become holy like him. We don’t enjoy being disciplined. It always seems to cause more pain than joy. But later on, those who learn from that discipline have peace that comes from doing what is right. Hebrews 12:5-11 GW

    ADVICE

Opinion or recommendation offered by another to serves as guide. What better than God’s advice to guide your life and actions?

Arrogance produces only quarreling, but those who take advice gain wisdom. Proverbs 13:10 GW

The thoughts of righteous people are fair. The advice of wicked people is treacherous. Proverbs 12:5 GW

My son, obey the command of your father, and do not disregard the teachings of your mother. Fasten them on your heart forever. Hang them around your neck. When you walk around, they will lead you. When you lie down, they will watch over you. When you wake up, they will talk to you because the command is a lamp, the teachings are a light, and the warnings from discipline are the path of life Proverbs 6:20-23 GW

A young man who is poor and wise is better than an old, foolish king who won’t take advice any longer. Ecclesiastes 4:13 GW

A stubborn fool considers his own way the right one, but a person who listens to advice is wise. Proverbs 12:15 GW

The Lord declares, How horrible it will be for those rebellious children. They carry out plans, but not mine. They make alliances against my will. They pile sin on top of sin. Isaiah 30:1 GW

Listen to advice and accept discipline so that you may be wise the rest of your life. Proverbs 19:20 GW

    ADVOCATE

Simply means to somebody who pleads on behalf of another or writes and speaks in support or defense of a cause or person. I can think of no advocate I want other than Jesus.

My dear children, I’m writing this to you so that you will not sin. Yet, if anyone does sin, we have Jesus Christ, who has God’s full approval. He speaks on our behalf when we come into the presence of the Father. 1 John 2:1 GW

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes to you. Then you will be my witnesses to testify about me in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 GW

I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper who will be with you forever. John 14:16 GW

Help carry each other’s burdens. In this way you will follow Christ’s teachings. Galatians 6:2 GW

    AFFLICTION

Pain and suffering either caused by illness, others, or self. This is simply what ails you.

There will be suffering and distress for every person who does evil, for Jews first and Greeks as well. Romans 2:9 GW

But that’s not all. We also brag when we are suffering. We know that suffering creates endurance, endurance creates character, and character creates confidence. We’re not ashamed to have this confidence, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5 GW

That’s why we brag in God’s churches about your endurance and faith in all the persecutions and suffering you are experiencing. Your suffering proves that God’s judgment is right and that you are considered worthy of his kingdom. Certainly, it is right for God to give suffering to those who cause you to suffer. 2 Thessalonians 1:4-7 GW

    ALONE

Apart, isolated from others, excluded, solitarily, unique, and without aid or help. With God you are never alone even in your most destitute time.

Then the Lord God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is right for him. Genesis 2:18 GW

Don’t love money. Be happy with what you have because God has said, I will never abandon you or leave you. Hebrews 13:5 GW

The time is coming, and is already here, when all of you will be scattered. Each of you will go your own way and leave me all alone. Yet, I’m not all alone, because the Father is with me. I’ve told you this so that my peace will be with you. In the world you’ll have trouble. But cheer up! I have overcome the world." John 16:32-33 GW

Be strong and courageous. Don’t tremble! Don’t be afraid of them! The Lord your God is the one who is going with you. He won’t abandon you or leave you." Deuteronomy 31:6 GW

There isn’t any temptation that you have experienced which is unusual for humans. God, who faithfully keeps his promises, will not allow you to be tempted beyond your power to resist. But when you are tempted, he will also give you the ability to endure the temptation as your way of escape. 1 Corinthians 10:13 GW

The Lord is my strength and my shield. My heart trusted him, so I received help. My heart is triumphant; I give thanks to him with my song. Psalm 28:7 GW

Two people are better than one because [together] they have a good reward for their hard work. Ecclesiastes 4:9 GW

    ANGER or ANGRY

That rage that lives inside of us, that feeling of displeasure often times aroused when we perceive we have been wronged. Trust in Jesus, be slow to anger and pray before speaking or taking action.

His anger lasts only a moment. His favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping may last for the night, but there is a song of joy in the morning. Psalm 30:5 GW

A gentle answer turns away rage, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

    Proverbs 15:1 GW

A hothead stirs up a fight, but one who holds his temper calms disputes. Proverbs 15:18 GW

Better to get angry slowly than to be a hero. Better to be even-tempered than to capture a city. Proverbs 16:32 GW

A person with good sense is patient, and it is to his credit that he overlooks an offense. Proverbs 19:11 GW

The rage of a king is like the roar of a lion. Whoever makes him angry forfeits his life. Proverbs 20:2 GW

Don’t be quick to get angry, because anger is typical of fools.

    Ecclesiastes 7:9 GW

In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Ephesians 4:26-27 NIV

Remember this, my dear brothers and sisters: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and should not get angry easily. An angry person doesn’t do what God approves of.
