INTRODUCTION
For me to continue on my Christian journey, it became imperative that I understood why God created the universe and why He placed us here. He began to loom to me as some kind of ogre playing games with us. I needed to know the truth. In my walk with Him, I have found that He has never had a problem with any question I have had to ask. If I am not supposed to know the answer, He just does not answer, and I accept that; however, this has occurred in only very few cases.
The journey we are about to take starts with the acceptance of a loving, omniscient and omnipotent God; the Bible is His message to us. You may not be of this persuasion. I still encourage you to read on, if not just for interest’s sake.
The question of ‘why we are here and what we are here for’ is a question that has plagued mankind from creation.
TRANSIENCE OF THE UNIVERSE
When we consider the transient nature of the universe which includes the earth we are living on, the pointlessness of it all really strikes home and we sit with King Solomon in Ecclesiastes when he says ‘vanity of vanities, all is vanity’, meaning that it is all pointless, that everything around us is finite (has a beginning and an end). All levels of scientific, philosophical, and religious sectors agree that this universe has a finite beginning and will have a finite end, which also applies to each individual person—if we could find anyone who is 125 years old, it would be headline news. (The oldest known living individual at the time of writing is 115 years old). So there is no permanence in anything here on earth.
