    Introduction

    In Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, Australia, and all over the world, a great number of people, regardless of race, religion, nationality and academic qualification have a misconception about Identity.

    This misconception about identity has existed all along in human history: long before the times known as the Dark Ages and the Enlightenment, during the times of the exploits of great explorers such as Christopher Columbus, during the western expansion of Europe to the Americas, colonization, the slave trade, the birth of the republic of the United States, the World Wars 1 and 11, the creation of the United Nations, the birth of the nation of Israel, the Civil Rights Movement, the fall of Communism, the expansion of Islam, the birth and growth of new Eastern religions, and the emergence of international terrorism, until now, this misconception has always existed.

    If you and I are just meeting for the first time and there were no host to do an introduction, and I ask you the very common question, Who are you? You will probably tell me your name and maybe your title or position in the society or in your organisation. But although your name, what you do, your gender and nationality point to your identity, they do not define your personal and original identity.

    To live fulfilling and productive lives, we must discover the realities and possibilities of our being, as Man-male’s and female’s alike, and this goes beyond biometric discoveries, political and philosophical theories and explanations. This adventure of personal discovery of identity is a lifetime affair, but the earlier one makes the commitment and realization the better, because this discovery is the beginning of destiny and true success in this life. In reality, the discovery and true definition of personal and original identity has become very necessary today for anyone who desires to be significant and make a difference in this age of globalization.

    I remember vividly when the reality of globalization first sank in for me. It was on the second day of my first visit to the first Nigerian capital city, the city of Lagos some years ago. Life in just one typical day in Lagos can be full of drama and lots of pressure, especially if you have to move from your home to different points in the city. Just one day in Lagos can throw up a mix of fun, madness and drama. Amazingly, the inhabitants and most business institutions of the city have devised different ways to survive and thrive in the environment, this with reference to both local and international socioeconomic market competitions.

    I had travelled and lived in other cities and parts of the country before this visit to Lagos, but encountering the massive movement of people, with the attendant crazy rush that is peculiar to this city and other mega cities all over the world, was very unusual to me. I felt uncomfortable and suddenly realized that for an individual or any group of people either in a hamlet, town, city or country to be significant and make qualitative impact on the streets and on our global village, it will require strategic positioning and some kind of aggressiveness. This obviously is not possible without understanding and personal commitment.

    In The Purpose and Power of Identity: Exploring the Realities and Possibilities of Our Being, we will look at worldwide and personal issues that relate directly and indirectly to life and our original identity, and we shall consider and overturn, both intelligently and scripturally, scientific and political theories and religious explanations that contradict the essence and capabilities of our creation in God.

    Friend, your attraction to this book is an indication of your interest to maximize your living, and your decision to read through will be the beginning of a brand-new spiritually refreshing and rewarding journey.

    I believe and pray that this encounter aid you in your pursuit of dignity, excellence and victory in life and corporate leadership.

    Chapter One

    UNDERSTANDING IDENTITY

    What we stand on determines how we see, and eventually how we act and our experiences or the outcomes of our lives—King

    A long time ago, before people were born, there was the making of man by the Almighty. Earlier before the making of the first humans who were to inhabit and take charge of the earth, they and their descendants, the Creator existed in a realm higher and superior to the earth realm, man’s environment which was yet to be created. The almighty God, the Creator existed in the supernatural realm, from where He operated and created the universe.

    The state of the earth before the creation as described in the first Bible book of Genesis reveals emptiness and formlessness which was displeasing to God, hence, His design and creation of the universe, and then all of mankind. God’s plan was an earth filled with plant and animal life of every variety and specie, all to be mastered and governed by human beings, made in the image and after His likeness, spiritual beings with physical bodies or with flesh and blood, perfectly built and allocated the natural realm-earth, which was to be overseen and ruled by the first human’s, and by extension all of mankind.

    In one of my earlier books called Under the Sun, a book which many people tell me is one of the best of all my published works, I shared that man by nature and essence was designed and created to function both spiritually and physically. This means that you and I have a spiritual and a physical life to live, and how we live both lives is very important to God, our Creator and Father.

    According to the Bible, we were made in the image and after the likeness of the almighty God and the revelation in this scriptural verse indicate that;

    1. Man was made with
