    What is a Ketogenic Diet?

    The Ketogenic diet has been around for 90 years. It was designed in 1924 by Dr. Russell Wilder who worked at the Mayo Clinic at the time. It was very effective for treating epilepsy. It stopped being used when anti-seizure medications came on the scene in the 40s. Research found that avoiding consuming food for a while, including carbs reduced how many seizures that a patient had. It also had a positive effect on hunger levels, cholesterol, blood sugar, and body fat. Long-term fasting isn't feasible for more than a couple of days. The keto diet was created to mimic the effects of fasting. This diet tricks the body into thinking that it is fasting by strictly eliminating the glucose that is found in carbs.

    Charlie Abraham's family started a foundation in 1994 after he recovered from seizures after trying every anti-seizure medicine and going through brain surgery that didn't help. They started Charlie on this diet when he was a toddler, and he remained on it for five years. He now goes to college and is still seizure-free.

    A ketogenic diet is a diet that is extremely low in carbs and high in fats. It will allow your body to stop being dependent on carbs for energy and start breaking down fats into a chemical compound known as ketones to be used for energy.

    Your body does ketosis every day. It doesn't matter what you eat. Your body adapts and processes various nutrients into fuel. It needs fuel to be able to function. Proteins, fats, and carbs are all used. Consuming a diet that is low in carbs but higher in fats will increase the process. This chemical reaction is normal and safe.

    When you consume large amounts of protein or carbs, your body breaks them down into a sugar called glucose. Glucose helps to create ATP. This is a fuel we need for our everyday activities and to maintain our
