MY FAMILY TREE
My family tree started long ago
from Bonny Scotland they went.
Two thieves in irons so I was told –
to the New World they were sent.
They landed in Virginia
then came through the gap.
To Tennessee and Kaintuck
by horse and wagon and a bearskin map.
Landed in southern Illinois
in the 1800’s – what fun!
Then later to McLean county
came William Henderson.
My great grandpa was he –
settled in the east of the county.
Had eleven kids did he
through grandma’s bounty.
On my mother’s side
from Indiana they came.
Out of Ambia and Advance
almost one and the same.
Rossiter Alkire
were Andy’s next titles.
And Ruth was a Whitecotton –
she certainly was not idle.
To Danville – then Bloomington –
in Illinois they did settle.
Now both sides were in the same county
both mixing in the same kettle.
My Dad’s side was aplenty
from the eleven they came.
Many Toshes still reside
in the county of McLean.
My Mom is now
the only Alkire in town.
But still has family in Danville –
not too far to be found.
Oh… to link to the past –
to understand their plight.
Why did they do what they did?
what fights did they fight?
Uncles’ Albert and Warren –
Grandpas’ Marshel and Andy.
Aunts’ Margaret and Wildadean –
there sure were some dandys!
But wherever they came –
whatever their plight?
They’re still part of me –
some were wrong – some were right.
Whatever the case –
take ‘ye time to reflect.
If it’s your family tree –
give it utter respect!
BLOOMING GROVE
From Keg Grove to Blooming Grove
in 1822.
And then became Bloomington
in the next six years plus two.
In the middle of the state,
in the middle of the corn.
It’s the seat of McLean County –
and that’s where I was born.
Bloomington, Illinois –
that’s my home town.
Not Minnesota or Indiana
or others of renown.
Was traveled by Lincoln
for many a year.
Gave his Lost Speech
there –
didn’t anyone hear?
When Abe was a lawyer
back in the day.
Was friends with Gridley, Davis and Fell –
our founding fathers all were they.
Then grew a twin –
an occasion so formal.
And the two began to grow –
it was really rather Normal.
Two universities
were there from the start.
Wesleyan and State Normal –
not too far apart.
Had the big fire downtown
in 1900.
And then Mother Jones spoke –
Join the Union, Boys
was her slogan.
And in the 50’s
when I was a kid.
Would go downtown
and walk the square I did.
Bats and gloves at Reads
and chili dogs at Kresges.
The change tunnel at Livingstons –
boy that was nifty.
There was Rolands and Shields
and Mobes and Dewenters.
And the restaurants they had
