About this ebook

In the wake of his beloved wife’s death, Detective Chris Ravello’s life is in shambles. Overwhelmed by grief and dogged by an unrelenting, devastating disease, Chris abruptly resigns as the NYPD’s Chief of the Division of Medical Crimes.

But his hopes for a healthier, less-troubled life are short-lived.

A harrowing near-death experience forces Chris to submit to a series of risky, ill-advised, and experimental treatments that will either cure him or kill him.

As Chris’ best friend, NYPD Detective Kevin Kennedy, investigates a series of perplexing and appalling deaths, he uncovers a disturbing truth – Ravello’s cure has already killed four other patients.

Just when all seems lost, hope comes from the unlikeliest of sources – an old nemesis making incredible claims:
Michelle Ravello is alive and he can lead the detectives to her and their killer.

But can Kennedy and Ravello trust one sociopath to catch another? And what is the terrible price they must pay for his cooperation?

Author

William Rubin

William Rubin is a practicing physician who enjoys weaving tales of medical/scientific intrigue. Writing for him is equal parts catharsis, creativity, and escape from the rigors of a busy medical practice and the joys and challenges of raising a family. The works of James Patterson, Robin Cook, Michael Palmer, and Patricia Cornwell inspired Dr. Rubin to create the Christopher Ravello Series. Challenges and tragedies in Dr. Rubin’s life, particularly the untimely death of his mother, provided some of the underlying drama, conflict, and turmoil for the series’ lead character. When he isn't busy practicing medicine or crafting his next medical thriller, Dr. Rubin enjoys time with his family and friends, running, playing piano, and travel. He values your thoughts, insights, and feelings on this book so please leave a review on your favorite website(s)

    Chapter 1

Here’s the burner you asked for, Kennedy grumbles as he tosses it into the back seat. Now set up that damn meet. Durand, handcuffed to the inside of the door of Kennedy’s Civic, punches the phone number in as he leans against the door. Ready her. Detective Kennedy and I will meet you in a half hour. Yes, the field by the abandoned warehouse, near the dock that goes to North Brother Island. Durand flips the phone shut. All set, Detective.

Kennedy peers at Durand through the rearview mirror. You better not try any shit, Durand. I’m in no mood for games. The detective enters the FDR Drive near the Queensboro Bridge and heads north, wishing they were in a police cruiser so he could cut through the heavy traffic. The next twenty minutes pass by in silence, Kennedy taking the RFK Bridge through Randall’s Island, then going north on the Bruckner to the Port Morris area of the Bronx. At exit 48 he makes a hard right turn, traveling due south on East 149th Street. A seedy, industrial area, they pass by a moving company and a beer distributor. Kennedy slows the car as they approach the massive, old, warehouse building. Broken windows and graffiti litter the worn brick structure. Adjacent to it a small field with patches of grass, garbage strewn about. Just beyond that a parking lot, fenced in with barbed wire, leading to a makeshift pier housing a few boats to provide transport to North Brother Island, located about six hundred feet off shore.

Kennedy eyes the area with suspicion. Alone, no backup nearby, he realizes how vulnerable and exposed he is, knowing the warehouse provides the perfect shield for an ambush. He punches in the access code and pulls into the parking area’s tiny entrance, driving to the far end of the lot. He leaves the car idling close
