People with Anxiety suffer every day by avoiding the things they fear and as a result, their world becomes smaller and smaller, severely limiting what they do, where they go, and who they see. How do I know? I suffered from Anxiety for years, and I learned it mostly from my family. I was afraid of the same things you are right now. If I struggled with a problem, there was lots of Anxiety until I either avoided it for as long as I could or made the decision to not address it at all (another avoidance strategy). If it seemed scary, then it must be something I should not do, so I didn’t do it. If I couldn’t predict the outcome, that could cause a panic attack. After that first panic attack, yeah, you know the one, I was afraid of having another one, so I wouldn’t go anywhere near the place or be in the situation where the first panic attack occurred, therefore thinking I was safe from having future panic attacks. As you know, that’s not true. And sometimes I knew that if a certain safe person was with me, that could keep me from having panic attacks or daily Anxiety. That strategy works a little bit, but not really, because you can’t be with that person 24/7. I’m willing to bet that you are spending lots of time trying to keep from panic attacks or endless Anxiety by trying to figure out how to avoid them, by checking your body for feelings of Anxiety, and you’re constantly trying to stop thinking about it all the time. It’s utterly exhausting.

I understand you because I was you. I know exactly what you’re going through.

I have spent years suffering since childhood. I was 27 years old and married with a beautiful daughter when I knew I had to change living in this endless, fearful lifestyle. You see, many of my relatives lived in other states, so that meant a plane ride to see them. Yes, riding on an airplane. I had never been on an airplane. In fact, I only knew of a few family members who had ever been in a plane, and they were always in situations of war (my father), scary, or dangerous flights because of turbulence. It was a great set up for never getting on an airplane because there was plenty of evidence airplanes were not to be trusted. Those things crash, and you will die!

It was in the late 1980s that I bought a cassette tape and workbook program from an airline pilot named Tom Bunn. He taught
