Birthday Wish - Rachel Rinetti
Chapter one
‘SIGN HERE. AND HERE. Oh, and here. That’s why I put the stickers there. Need to make sure you sign in all the right places before you leave today.’ Catherine, the young lawyer, smiled as she watched Liam sign his life away on the craziest thing he’d done so far in his life.
Liam kept his eyes on her slim fingers and long red fingernails as she pointed to the places he needed to sign. Once the last flick of the pen left the page, a heavy weight lifted off Liam’s shoulders. A breath released from deep within his lungs, and he looked up at the young woman and smiled.
She took the papers and straightened them against the desk before placing them in a purple tray filled to the brim with documents.
‘Congratulations, Liam. It’s official. You’re now the proud part-owner of the hottest new bar in Canberra, along with Jaxon Thomas. I wish you all the success in the world.’ She stood up, revealing an exceptionally tight black pencil skirt and a cream blouse that showed off the lacy lavender bra beneath. It made Liam’s heart beat a little faster. Catherine’s dainty, classic beauty was startling.
Liam knew right away she was the right woman to help draw up the contract for the new bar. She oozed professionalism and took the time to explain everything to him in a way he understood. It was a relief when Catherine stepped into the waiting area when he arrived at the law firm for his first appointment. He was perspiring in the waiting room, his hands clammy and jaw tight, hoping to heaven the woman he loved didn’t step out and call his name. Even after spending a passionate weekend in the Snowy Mountains with Angie, he hadn’t seen or spoken to her in months.
Catherine’s slicked back brunette ponytail and large framed glasses emphasised her angular features and enlarged brown eyes. In a way, she reminded him of Angie.
Angie.
She haunted his dreams. He hated walking through life with everything reminding him of her sweet smile and the hint of her floral perfume. Even this young woman, who looked nothing like Angie, reminded him of her laugh, the way she smelled after a shower, and the nervous giggle she made when he said something inappropriate. Why wouldn’t the memory of her leave him alone?
‘Thanks, Catherine. I really appreciate you taking the time to walk me through the process and explaining it all to me. Bit of a legal dummy over here,’ he said as he raised his hands in mock surrender.
Catherine’s face flushed pink at the comment. His own face flushed hot in reaction. Sometimes he forgot the effect he had on women.
‘Call me anytime if you need further legal advice or have any questions. Otherwise, best of luck.’
They stood there, shaking hands for longer than necessary, but it was nice to meet a down-to-earth woman. Liam had sworn off dating since the week he’d spent with Angie at Christmastime. Even though it’d been almost four months, he was still trying to heal his busted heart. A heart badly bruised from what went down. Namely, her husband returning with an announcement that he wanted her back. When Liam looked in her eyes, there was something in them he’d never noticed before. Fear? Indecision? Liam got the feeling she didn’t want to go back to her husband. But they were married. Marriage meant something to her, and Liam wasn’t going to argue with her decision.
‘Hey, this might sound forward, so feel free to put me in my place, but the grand opening of the bar is tonight. I’ll shout you a drink if you head on down. No pressure at all. But it should be fun. Discounted drinks and a live band.’
Catherine didn’t pull her hand away from Liam’s. Instead, they continued to stand there, shaking hands and smiling.
‘Are you asking me on a date, Liam?’
‘Not at all. I’m guessing there’s a lawyer-client code that says you can’t. But it’s a free drink. And I’ll even put out a bowl of chips for you,’ he said with a mock wink.
‘Well, technically our working relationship is over. I’m attending a ball tonight, but maybe I’ll head on over after that? I can even bring some people and introduce them to the hottest new bar in Canberra. Us lawyers do like to let our hair down occasionally.’
Liam smiled, a rare occurrence for him these days. ‘I’ll be there all night so you’re welcome to stop by anytime.’
‘Perfect,’ Catherine replied.
‘SO, ALL SIGNED? TOOK you bloody long enough. Now you’re really stuck with me, mate.’
‘I guess I am, Jax,’ Liam said as he hit the accelerator when the light turned green at the intersection.
After Christmas, Liam did some soul searching. Without Angie, he was looking for his place in the world. Angie was his home, the woman he wanted to be with. But fate didn’t feel the same way. He came back to Canberra as single as when he left. Sitting at his desk at work, his mind wouldn’t allow him to forget. It kept bringing up memories, reminders of their time together in Gumtree Plains. That one moment when they were one. He’d never been so damn happy in his life as when he was with Angie, lying in bed and drawing circles on her naked back. Coming back to his desk and staring at the computer screen at work reminded him how much he hated his job. Knowing he and Angie were over for good, he wondered what would come of his life if he never took a chance. People wouldn’t remember him as the guy who played it safe. After months of sweet talking and persuasion, Liam finally called Jax back and told him he was in.
‘Are you sure about the name? I mean, Cowboys is a bit lame don’t you think?’
‘Ahh,’ Liam said as he pressed down the indicator and took the last turn into the city. The bar was in the centre of Canberra, next to all the other bars, pubs and nightclubs. Only it was a hidden treasure. Upstairs and conveniently tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
‘It’s a bit late for that now, mate. Name’s been registered. Marketing’s got the name written all over it. What, are you getting cold feet?’ Liam asked.
‘No, I just want this to be a success. I really want to be able to hand in my resignation at the end
