Image result for mermaid transparencyWas it love at first sight? Perhaps. Many thought it might have been the work of the unscrupulous Sea Witch, Hermione, long a bitter and banished King’s Court Matron. So, was it the crafty wiles of Hermione, scheming to seek her sordid revenge, or was it a simple matter of serendipity? All we know for certain is that two young royals, one landed and one not, met during a raging storm as fierce and intense as the love they would none too soon escape. Was it fate, design, or—perhaps—black magic? Who’s to say?
What we do know is that it was sensuous, erotic, and insatiable as they fought to extinguish the passions that flamed their heat by indulging in every desire that swept them into one another’s arms. Their shared carnal voracity fanned an appetite no amount of indulgence could satisfy.
After all, it happened...Once upon a time...
On a single crag at the edge of a brilliant coral reef, sat a beautiful and lonely mermaid princess longing for the day when she would come of age and be allowed to pursue her dreams of love and grandeur. Her wistful gaze drifted...far across the land and as long across the sea as the eye could behold, where the deep turquoise waters met the sky of blue and the water was so deep, so very, very deep. No one really knew how far below the surface the ocean floor held all the treasures and secrets of the centuries that came before, as all attempts to reach the midnight depths failed. The Royal Wizards and High Priests could only guess at the depth of the nadir beneath the surface and the secrets held shrouded in shadows. They were quite sure, indeed, that to assume that nothing lived below the sea in the darkness was frivolous. As certain as butterflies kissed fragrant petals and birds flitted from branch to branch amongst the trees in the clouds above, there were creatures that made their homes in the cool secret shadowed hollows where ocean plants stretched towards the light and danced pliantly with a shift in current or the brush of a passing fish, both large and small.
In the deepest concave of the clear azure waters was a beautiful castle, fit for the Royal Family. The castle was big and expansive with walls of coral and spires of conch shells. The roof was fashioned with elegant oyster shells that opened and closed with the ocean currents baring the glittering jeweled pearls snuggled inside, fit for the crown of any queen. The arched Gothic windows were made of colored sea glass, gathered before the royal wedding. The light flickered off of, and through, the beautiful colored glass to dance patterns across the castle floor of shells and abalone shards. The castle entrance was guarded by the Royal Guard of Sea Stars, a position of honor, humility, and grave responsibility, handed down with pride from father to son.
The Sea King had built the castle for his bride who, shortly after giving birth to their last daughter, left His Royal Highness a sad and lonely widower. For many years now, the King of the Sea lived in the castle with his princess daughters, his aged mother and his loyal subjects. The King’s mother was proud, elegant and wise. She ran the castle home smoothly and efficiently. She was held in the highest regard for the way in which she managed the household, raised her granddaughter princesses – there were six in all – and cared for the Sea King’s subjects. She wore twelve oyster shells along her tail to signify her revered position while all others could only don six. She was very strict with her charges allowing them few dalliances or interests outside of their studies or their splendid gardens along the outer castle walls.
The princesses each had a beautiful garden patch that reflected their personalities: one was in the shape of a whale, one the shape of a mermaid, another the shape of a conch shell.
