He's impossible to resist—each touch makes my thighs quiver, my heart flutter, and my pulse race.
But his dreams are far ahead of him, while mine are a speck in the rear-view mirror.
This can't last. But as he worships my body he begs for my heart.
Can I trust him enough to love again?
Or will I lose him for good?

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

    "I bet I know what you’re thinking."

Ida glanced across the room at her business partner and raised a brow. All right, Susie, you’re on. Whoever loses has to go make the coffee.

The enticing view from her front window beckoned and she turned to watch once again as the young man hefted yet another heavy box. Was that a trickle of sweat wending its way down the golden contours of his back? She was too far away to confirm either way, but imagination lent the moment an attention to detail that her eyes could only guess at.

She leaned forward, straining for a better view of the finely sculpted body with those built-for-weight-lifting shoulders. If there was one positive thing about this seemingly endless heat wave, it was that her new neighbor had removed his shirt and now labored in the warmth clad in nothing except denim cut-offs and a pair of trainers. An ensemble she and Susie had been surreptitiously appreciating for the past several minutes.

That vast expanse of exposed skin was deliciously tanned. Arousal rolled through her belly and centered between her thighs, and she shifted uncomfortably, hoping Susie wouldn’t pick up on her reaction. Wonder if he’s wearing sunscreen? Why can’t I take my eyes off him? It’s not like I’ve never seen a near-naked guy before.

At that moment he paused and then turned to stare toward the window, straight at the spot where she was currently standing. Crap! Her breath caught, and she took a step further back behind the white lace curtain. Could have sworn I was well hidden. How did he know?

You’re thinking, ‘ah...if only he were fifteen years older.’ Susie’s smirk was all-knowing and Ida wished she could contradict her friend. Instead, her cheeks heated uncomfortably. Was she silently broadcasting all of her secrets today?

Maybe, she admitted. Seeing as how I’m practically old enough to be his mother—

Give me a break! Her friend rolled her eyes as they both made their way into Ida’s kitchen. You’re thirty-seven, Ida, not seventy. And he must be what? Early twenties? Doesn’t even qualify as toy boy material, these days.

    "Sue!"

I’m serious. How many female celebs have a younger man in tow? Hell, even Kate’s older than Prince William, you know!

By about what? Five, six months, maybe? Ida forced a laugh as she measured coffee beans and switched on the grinder, aware by her actions that she was conceding the bet to Susie.

The rich and earthy scent of Columbian coffee filled the kitchen. Just right for Saturday morning with a friend. Once the grind was complete, she filled the pot to start the extraction process. And with my five-foot two-inch height and mousy brown hair, I’m right up there with Princess Kate, of course.

Not much we can do about your height, I admit, but your hair’s not mousy brown. It’s a beautiful dark red that I’d give my eye teeth for, especially in the sunlight. And, in my opinion, that young stallion moving in across the street would be lucky to have you.

Young stallion? The image implied virility and life.

The muscles around Ida’s mouth tightened. Let’s leave it, shall we, Sue?

Hon, you’re going to have to put the past behind you at some stage. Everyone knows Luke was a massive A-hole, and—

Susie. Stop. Ida knew her friend meant well, and yet she couldn’t help the tinge of frustration that colored her next words. Why do I try so hard when no one ever notices? "I think I have done pretty well putting the past behind me, actually. Look around. New home, new career, new business... Ida paused to let her words sink in, before she added, In fact, the reason I called you over today was to discuss a couple of our bookings for next week. We received so many new leads from that social media campaign we’re likely going to have to hire additional wait staff."

Thankfully the warning in her eyes and the clipped tone was correctly interpreted, and the two women bent their heads over the files on the breakfast bench.

Two hours later, with Susie gone, Ida found her thoughts and her gaze straying back to the perfection of that golden body as he labored and cursed in the searing summer heat. Well, almost perfection. She frowned, craning forward from her vantage point near the window. It looked as if he had a slight limp now, favoring his left leg. The limp didn’t make him any less sexy, though it was obvious he’d had just about enough on a day that was more suited to laziness than hard work.

Must be over forty degrees Celsius outside. Late summer in Melbourne definitely was not the best time for moving house. Waves of hot air rose up from the tarmac on the road while the drone of cicadas, muted by the glass, still managed to infuse her blood with a curious sense of lethargy.

    Poor guy!

She thought of the outdoor spa in her backyard. Would it be appropriate...? No, she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Sharing a hot tub—in this heat the water could be set to a nice cooling temperature—implied a certain level of intimacy, and she didn’t even know this guy’s name. Still... Her imagination went on a journey of its own as she continued to watch from behind the protection of her curtain.

Would it really be so wrong to be intimate with someone like her brand-new neighbor? He was young, definitely, though he was clearly an adult—one who exuded
