Cedric sat on the couch with his laptop warm against his legs. He stared down at the screen, doing his best to contain the frustration burning in his lungs and just above his stomach.

Technically, he wasn’t supposed to think about these sorts of decisions while mad. And yet, he kept thinking about their last conversation, the one where she promised she would behave herself. To others, it would seem relatively minor. To him it was the world.

If she was going to go out with her friends, she would tell him. He didn’t attempt to regulate where she was going, but he thought that he had every right to know about her trips. He married her, after all.

Pattie promised him. Promises meant something to him.

The last time she did this, he got irritated, and she dropped to her knees, saying that she was sorry she had irritated him. She swore that, next time, she would send him a text message. That’s all he really wanted. That is all he really needed.

But he was home alone now, staring at his laptop, answering emails for work. He had come home, looking forward to seeing his wife.
