About this ebook

Last Call is a book of poems that explores the journey and search for our elusive God. This is the journey of the soul, and the search is joined through the intimacies of everyday experiences, the confusions of relationships, the ever-present struggle with aging and mortality, and the wanderings amid the mysteries of faith. These poems reflect that, even in our uncertainty and not-knowing, we are continually summoned to live with an abiding sense of gratitude. That is the way home.

    For Sarah and Kate

If you bring forth what is within you,

What you bring forth will save you.

If you do not bring forth what is within you,

What you do not bring forth will destroy you.

    The Gospel of Thomas

    Part I

And He Shall Reign Forever and Ever

I believe in walking the dog at night

when spirits are alive and dancing.

I believe in music and in good books

that ease the hurting side of pain.

I believe in watching the moon rise

    through Carolina pines.

I believe in sitting by a fire,

    watching, doing nothing.

I believe in the realness of post-traumatic stress.

I believe in the quiet strength of the

    Blue Ridge Mountains.

I believe the worst thing is not the last thing.

I believe in the Psalms of lament.

I believe in rolling over, pulling up the covers,

and sleeping in on Saturday mornings.

I believe in the wild danger of poetry.

I don’t pretend to know how—

    or even what it means—but

    I believe He shall reign

    forever and ever.

    The Long Way

    home

    winds through all

    the dreams,

    and stories,

    through all the silences,

    and poems

    who still believe

    in me

    when I feel like

    I am well nigh on

    to lost.

The class assignment for high school senior English

    was to write a poem.

The poems would be judged by our teachers

and the winning poem would be published
