    Preface

We have been killing for thousands of years—in wars and battles, over personal enmities, in fits of rage and anger, terrorism and whatnot—the act of killing is perhaps one of the most commonly repeated acts throughout the course of history. However, killing somebody because they wanted to banish their own ‘demons’ is obviously not a good explanation. It borders on insanity and dementia, yet this is how it is for some.

Many serial killers that have been caught and interviewed have stated that the feeling of satisfaction or pleasure that they got from the act of killing was the reason for which they continued killing. Some claim that the fit of anger that it drives them into is what brings them satisfaction. However, despite their horrific actions, there are very few serial killers that claim to feel any sort of regret or guilt.

In fact, a large majority of the serial killers that are apprehended and put in prison must serve a life term. In some countries, such as Ecuador, a life term primarily entails a period of 20 years, which, as you might expect, is not exactly a fair treatment for taking so many lives. In Canada, a life sentence is 25 years, whether you killed 3 or 33 people.

If you were to read through police history, you would find that that there have been all sorts of killers. There have been those who merely kill for the fun of it. Then there are those who kill and keep the remains as a sort of trophy for their actions. There are those who like to terrorize and torture their victims before killing them. There is virtually no limit to the type of killers that you can find by running a simple search through a police database. There are even such people who first kill and then eat the dead bodies.

Throughout the annals of history, you can read instances of some of the most horrific crimes committed by man. As mentioned, these men have very little to no remorse for what they are doing. If you were to look at their faces, seldom would you find them looking disheveled or worried. These are people who accept their fate and don’t consider for a moment that they are doing something wrong. The horrific nature of their actions does not dawn upon them, even after they have been found, captured, and convicted. Almost all serial killers that have been caught throughout the course of history have exhibited sociopathic behavior. These people also try to avoid meeting with others and moving about in public places. Instead, most of the serial killers search for their prey from the shadows. They seek opportunities where their victims might be found alone before attacking.

The perception that most people have of the people of Canada is that
