    By RaeAnne Hadley

Madysen has a job to do, Nate sees a future between them. Can he convince her he's worth the time?

    Dedication

Iwrote this story for my oldest daughter and her first boyfriend. First love is always the sweetest and the most painful. Though they are not together anymore, I still love them both

    Chapter One

Madysen blew her long bangs out of her face in frustration and double checked the GPS. According to the digital map, her destination was directly to her left but all she could see were acres of corn. Her phone’s GPS was often wrong but so was the iPad work sent her to use. Usually, between the two of the devices, she could find the actual house. Today both devices were failing her.

She picked up her survey sheet and stared at the name. Nathanial Montague. Where in the hell do you live? She glanced out over the corn fields again, searching for a hidden driveway. She only had one more week to get her surveys done and back in to NASS to make the due date.

She put her truck into gear and drove slowly up and down the county road, searching for signs of a house or driveway. After forty-five minutes of searching she gave up. She picked up her cell phone and dialed the number provided on her contact sheet. She rolled her eyes when once again, voicemail picked up.

Yeah, hi, Mr. Montague. This is Madysen Richard’s with NASS calling again to go over the AG survey with you. I’m trying to find your house but I’m having difficulty. Could you please call me back? Thank you so much.

She hung up and absently blew at her hair again. He was the last one on her list that she hadn’t contacted yet. If she could just reach him, even over the phone, she’d be done with this batch of surveys. She felt frustrated and wanted to continue but the growling in her stomach reminded her that it was after one in the afternoon and breakfast had been seven hours ago.

She headed back into town to find the little café she had passed earlier. She hadn’t been to this area before and enjoyed finding little towns that still held old time charm. This was part of the job that kept her working with the government. They paid for her to drive all over designated areas to interview farmers and ranchers for specific surveys. She was able to see the countryside, explore new towns and meet some really great people, all while getting paid. Some of the people weren’t very nice and refused to participate in the surveys but for the most part, people were friendly and hospitable.

She pulled in front of the café and grabbed her clipboard. She might as well input her completed surveys into her iPad while she waited to eat.

A petite brunette greeted her. One for lunch? Would you like a booth or sit at the counter?

Madysen returned her smile. Booth would be great. I’m on a working lunch.

She followed the young lady over to the booth, sat down and scanned over the menu. Something light and quick so she could get back on the road was in order. She was three hours from home and wanted to get back before dark. She still had horses to tend to.

The young lady came back. I’m your server too. My name is Angie and I’ll be taking your order. Can I get you something to drink?

Yes, I’ll take a Pepsi and I’ll go ahead and order if that’s alright. I need to get back on the road.

You bet. What can I get you?

I’d like the Reuben sandwich with French fries and a side of ranch.

Gotcha covered. The Reuben’s are really good. I’ll put your order in and bring back your drink.

Madysen smiled again before focusing on her work. She felt anxious about having that one last survey being uncompleted. She was a perfectionist when it came to her work. It was something that had been instilled in her by her father. He was a hard-working, hard-to-love kind of man but she still adored him.

Honey, your word and your actions are everything. People will judge you every day by the things you say and do. If you want to be taken seriously and get places in this world, do the best that you can and when you tell someone you’re going to do something, do it. No excuses. He had given her a brief hug after telling her that then went back to his shop. The man had barely
