Hygge Games - Helena Olsen
Introduction
Hygge and why you should play games
Hygge is a Danish word and a way of life that values happiness, contentment, companionship and the simpler things in life above all else. It is a vital component in the lifestyle of the Danes and is part of the reason why Denmark is regarded by many as the happiest place on the planet.
There are many elements of hygge, however games and social gatherings play a fundamental role within any hygge lifestyle. We instinctively recognize the value of games for children and their development. You would have played many games yourself throughout your own childhood and perhaps you have the opportunity now to teach children those same games that you enjoyed.
We know how important games are for children, but we often fail to realize how beneficial they are for us as adults as well. Playing games, of whatever type, gives you a chance to free yourself from the stresses of work and other commitments. Games provide an opportunity to relax and socialize with friends and family, to use your imagination and creativity in all sorts of ways. Games give you a chance to play, to relax and simply to enjoy yourself.
The benefits of game playing
We know that playing and laughter can relieve stress by the release of endorphins, the feel good chemicals that flood the body with feelings of pleasure. Playing a game, with its rules and targets and strategy is important also to help with memory and thinking skills.
Games keep you mentally sharp, as well as enhancing memory and cognitive skills. Games give us a chance to think in different ways, to create a plan and follow a strategy to achieve a target together. Games increase our problem-solving ability and give us confidence to handle situations that we might not have expected to encounter. Games make us better at thinking on our feet and adapting to different situations as they arise.
Physical games also promote spatial awareness and co-ordination as well as being great exercise for everyone. Games strengthen social skills such as communication and teamwork, as well as enhancing number and language skills which are required for all games.
Playing games socially forges bonds with people as well as heightening your communication and teamwork skills. Relationships are strengthened when you enjoy each other’s company with games encouraging trust, co-operation with others and giving you chances to make new friends. All of these things are key parts of a hygge lifestyle.
