About this ebook
Mayflower Street runs between Jamaica Road and the Thames in Bermondsey, South London. In 1939, 34 houses and 121 residents occupied the street. Between 1940 and 1941 bombs fell on 7 of these houses and at the end of war, the street – with its corner shop, was demolished.
Using personal testimony, physical theatre and the combined skills of a cast of contemporary Londoners the project aims to share some of the experiences and events that made our city into the place we know today.
Blackbirds is the play that emerged from the London Bubble Theatre's research and interviews of South Londoners who lived through the Blitz between 1940 and 1941.

Blackbirds - Simon Startin
Simon Startin
Simon Startin has worked as a professional theatre maker since 1991, initially as an actor, but branched into writing through the Paines Plough ‘Wild Lunch’ Scheme in 2003. The resulting play Revolting was premiered at the Xposure Festival 2003, a dark satire on models of disability, telling the story of Happenstance –‘the cripple that Christ never cured’.
Since then he has struck up a fruitful relationship with the London Bubble Theatre Company, specialising in work for open air promenade. Blackbirds is Simon’s seventh work for London Bubble and five of his previous works for them were awarded Time Out Critics’ Choice.
Subsequent work includes: The Crock of Gold, Metamorphoses, Myths, Rituals and Whitegoods, The Dong with a luminous nose, The Odyssey and Sirens of Titan.
Currently, he is a creative director at the Big Lounge Collective.
