The wooden cot was uncomfortable. It was by far the worst place he had slept since stepping inside Sparrow’s Corner. The hay stuck him in places he couldn’t stand. But it was better than sleeping on the hard forest floor. He welcomed the warmth of the hearth; it brought relief from the winter wind seeping into the fall weather. Soon snow would blanket the countryside and travel would be near to impossible.
Aerigon was new to the small village, and he repulsed the adults. When you’re an orphan at twelve, the adults treat you like you’ve got the plague, or like you are a burglar in the night coming to steal from them, he thought. But
