      AMERICAN NOVELIST, SHORT STORY WRITER, PLAYWRIGHT, ACTIVIST, AND DESIGNER

      Born in New York in 1862.

      Died in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt, France, in 1937.

      The Age of Innocence (1920), novel

      Edith Wharton was born Edith Newbold Jones to a prominent New York family in the mid-19th century. She travelled throughout Europe frequently in her early life before settling permanently in France after the dissolution of her marriage. Wharton wrote nearly 20 novels and over 50 short stories as well as collections of poetry and plays and was widely recognised during her lifetime for her talent as a writer: she was the first woman to ever win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (for The Age of Innocence in 1921) and was thrice nominated for the Nobel Prize.

      In addition to her literary career, Wharton was renowned for her expertise in home décor and gardening. She also distinguished herself as an important activist and advocate during the First World War (1914-1918) by raising funds
