Book Marketing for Beginners - Heather Hart
Preface
––––––––
I grew up dreaming about being an author and being told that it was an unrealistic dream. Fast forward to today, and my dream has come true. I am not only an author, but an internationally best-selling and award-winning author—come to find out, my dream wasn’t so unrealistic after all. And now I am committed to helping other authors make their dreams come true, too. That is why I am so excited to share the content in this booklet with you.
While the title of this booklet is Book Marketing for Beginners you don’t have to be a beginner to get something out of it. Everyone needs to know the basics. So whether you are preparing to start marketing your book for the first time, or you have been marketing for a while and are trying to figure out where you are going wrong, I encourage you bunker down with a notepad, pen, highlighter, whatever you need to remember the basics that we will cover.
Just to give you a heads up, here is an outline of what’s ahead...
Where to Start: The first thing we are going to talk about is where to start your book marketing. I want you to gain confidence in your marketing efforts and to be able to have fun marketing your book. And starting in the right spot really is the first step towards book marketing success.
Book Marketing Activities: The next thing we will cover is some of the different marketing activities that you can do to market your book. After all, knowing is half the battle.
How to Weave It All Together: Having a to do list that is five miles long, isn’t something that any author needs—and that isn’t what book marketing should look like. Marketing is more about weaving several things together than it is checking things off. In this section, we will go into more detail about why that is and how to do it.
Building a Book Marketing Plan: Then, when all that is said and done, we will cover the basics of building a book marketing plan that works for you. We are all different. All our books are different. In fact, most of my books are different. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all book marketing plan. So, we will cover how to create one that works for you.
Taking Action: Before I turn you loose into the marketing world, I will walk you through how to market your book after you have a plan—because making the plan is only the beginning. Once you have it, you actually have to move forward with it. I am queen of making plans and organizing, and have learned the hard way that without action, it is just a waste of time. So, to keep you from getting stuck in the mud, I will walk you through how to keep moving forward.
How to Make It Fun! And most importantly, we are going to cover how to make marketing your book fun. I used to think that book marketing was this horrible plague that authors were faced with and I hated it. I mean, if someone would ask me about my book, I would try to figure out how not to talk about it—it was bad. But, I have since learned a few simple things that can totally change your outlook on book marketing, and I want to share those with you.
I have also included over 200 ways to market your book in the appendix, so be sure to check those out. Don’t be afraid to mark the ones you want to try or start a list of your own. The whole point is for you to be able to take the information contained here and put it to use.
This eBook is based off my webinar, Book Marketing Basics. I have also included a link in the conclusion so you can watch the replay of it as well.
Are you ready to get started?
Introduction
So, you wrote a book, now what?
––––––––
When you first step into the world of book marketing, it can be a little intimidating if you don’t have a marketing background—I have been there, I understand.
We would all love to finish writing a book and watch it fly up the best seller ladder, but first we have to get it published, and then—even if we score a contract with a traditional publisher—we have to do some marketing in order for it to see the light of day, much less best seller status.
But where do we start?
There are six key factors to successfully marketing any book that you need to know or prepare before you begin to market to make sure you are headed in the right direction.
1. Know Your Vision
The first thing you need to know is what your vision is. If you don’t already know what that is, answer these questions:
* Why did you write your book?
* What did you or do you hope to accomplish by doing so?
Those answers will help you define
