It had started the night before after a few too many vodka cocktails. I was with my cheerleading squad at an out-of-town tournament. The host squad had taken us to a local bar to celebrate the end of the tourney. Our team had tied for second with the hosts.

The first-place team had all left after one drink. The other teams had left shortly thereafter, leaving us alone with the hosts.

Our hosts were dark haired, their long straight bangs almost black; we were all blondes (though Marcie had dyed her hair to make the squad and I’d applied liberal highlighting). Having the same hair color made for a better show. Blonde coordinated with our team’s blue and green colors. The host team had gone one step further by adopting identical hairdos—all had the same straight hair, bangs cut just above the eyes, elsewhere ending just above their shoulders. But we hadn’t gone that far—any hairdo was fine so long as it was blonde.

At the bar, we’d intermingled among their squad and I had ended up with their most vociferous member, Alex Hekmer. Her full name was Alexandra. I’d been itching to ask whether her dad had wanted an Alexander, but it was hard to get a word in edgewise and our conversation had moved on to other topics.

What’re you studying? she asked.

Art history. You?

Engineering.

Hopefully none of your bridges’ll collapse.

"None of my bridges will ever collapse."

She was a little too vehement about that so I decided to change the subject. Did your boyfriend come with you to the tournament?

I’m single. I prefer to concentrate on my studies. What about your boyfriend?

No. I’m single too. At least I was since last week when Lance had demanded I return his athletic jacket. He’d wanted to stay out late. I’d wanted to make curfew.

College is brutal, tests, term papers, she’d said.

I nodded. My only outlet is cheerleading.
