    Chapter One

Father Declan O’Shea slouched in an upholstered chair in the luxurious lobby of the recently remodeled Kinnitty Castle. The heady fumes of the blue Sharpie pen poised in his fist wafted up his nose. Stacks of newly-printed paperback copies of Fantastic Faith and Folklore stood tidily and expectantly arranged on the polished antique table.

Not one single person stood in a queue to purchase his book. He watched a parade of mammies in piebald leggings pushing their prams, clusters of shrieking school children, clumps of sullen teenagers, and a smattering of health-crazy seniors pass by the wide-open castle entry door. Several glanced in, then moved along without slowing.

Finally, a matronly woman in a smart suit click-clacked her high heels across the stone floor. He’d met her before the alleged book signing began. The peel-and-stick name tag on her tailored jacket read: Mary Cologan, Irish Hospice Foundation, Co. Offaly.

Not many books purchased this morning, Father? she asked.
