25 Year of Santa Stories - A Special Forward
For the past 25 years, I’ve volunteered as Santa Claus for organizations that did not have the funds to hire a Santa. This included places like boys & girls clubs, children’s hospitals, military bases, women’s & children’s shelters, fire victim shelters, schools, churches, community centers, temporary housing centers, casinos, apartments, and everything in between. I got my start portraying Santa when a good friend of mine became ill the night before a large boys & girls club appearance and suggested I fill in for him. I did, and the rest is history and now immortalized in text.
I have to do a special shout out to all of the wonderful, amazing, and selfless elves at all of the locations who give their time and talents to help make memories for kids every Holiday season. I have always enjoyed watching their reactions: the unfiltered, honest, humorous, and heartfelt comments of the little characters
we encounter. There’s something about being at a Santa appearance for several hours that is very different than that of a shopping mall. Malls typically feature a quick hello, what’s your name & age, what is your wish for Christmas, smile for the photo, and done. Other than on TV, books, videos, etc. kids today don’t get to spend any real quality time with jolly old Saint Nick. At Santa appearances for organizations, many run 2- 4 hours which gives kids who may be too timid initially to meet Santa the time to observe things and finally build up the courage to get their Santa legs.
One of the most important things I explain to parents and grandparents is to not force kids to meet Santa. Since there is often several hours for the event, I encourage them to let the kids warm up to the idea rather than push them into it. Imagine a kid, especially a first timer, looking at this icon with a long white beard, full plush red suit, and the ability to grant presents and miracles. Why would they just immediately go up and meet him, especially after their parents and grandparents have told them constantly not to speak to strangers!
All in good time is my motto to the kids.
I’m often asked what’s the most amazing place I’ve been Santa at. There are myriad mesmerizing situations; however, the one that always shines out is the Pueblo of Acoma in New Mexico at their ancestral site, The Rock,
located on a 365+ foot mesa. Acoma Sky City
is the oldest inhabited community in North America. Several hundred children gathered for Christmas Day services at their 16th century Mission. I arrived on the back of the Pueblo’s fire truck (with the EMT unit following). There in the Spanish Mission, I presented blankets to the Matriarchs of the 13 clans, presented a plate of food at the altar, and caught my Santa sleeve on the hand of the hand-carved wooden Christ child which had been presented to
