Introduction
Dear friend,
This book was written with you in mind.
I have been spared for sixty-six years to date and am very grateful for being able to open my eyes each morning. Many of my friends and family members have passed on and I am still walking on Mother Earth—indeed a blessing. I am just an everyday man with a typical story to tell—nothing glamorous! For years I have longed to share some practical guidelines on how to live a better life, based on my own experiences.
I’ve lived a full life so far. I am acutely aware that I made many mistakes (some of them very stupid) and that many of them could have been prevented. The problem was that there was no schooling in life skills; at least not when I was at school. The career guidance classes in our final year of school were just before mathematics and were primarily used to catch up with homework and for chit-chat or flirting with the girls. I still think that life skills education and training before leaving school would make the world a better place.
Think about it: with personal finance training, we will have less debt; proper career guidance with visits to preferred work places will result in better career choices; understanding diversity and human behaviour will help us to select the right partner and reduce the appalling divorce rate, and training in human relations will create less conflict. It took me more than forty-eight years after leaving school to gather knowledge of and insight into how life works, and I am still learning every day.
I often ask myself if I would have lived a different life and the answer is a definite no! Everyone has a story to tell about his/her journey. What follows is the story of my journey to date and I hope and pray to God to spare me many more months and years to enjoy it.
The questions I have for you are:
What is your story? Do you wish it was a different one? In which way?
Are you OK with yourself and your journey so far? It is not too late to change it.
How is your career, your financial situation, your health, relationships, and spiritual life?
How many months/years of working life do you have left calculated at an average retirement age of sixty-five? What will retirement mean to you?
Do you live a full life or are you just drifting from one day to the next with no purpose or goals?
What will the inscription be on your grave stone? ‘Here lies Pieter who always moaned and just cared about himself’, or, ‘Here lies Pieter who was an inspiration for others to become the best they can be’?
How will your family and friends remember you? Someone who made a difference to this world or someone who did everything for self-interest?
Are you realising your full potential?
Remember that you go through life only once and need to make the best of it.
Many of us are bound by our thoughts about our circumstances. We can all soar like eagles high above the ground on a new journey filled with joy and prosperity—we just need to change our thoughts and work on our dreams.
My contribution to your journey is this book and an e-platform to record and support your own life journey. For more information, please visit www.milife.online and register for free to gain access to the Managing your journey page.
What follows is a short summary of my journey to date with a few experiences I’ve had along the road and the lessons I learned from them. More important are the thoughts and tools that can assist you in creating a better life for yourself and your family.
Thank you for reading this book and may you be blessed by all your dreams coming true.
With the utmost respect for you, your family, and your journey!
Pieter van Rensburg
Chapter 1
Mi journey
Our journey begins in a safe harbour when we are at home still and our parents are taking care of us. As we grow up, we leave the safe harbour and venture out into the ocean; quite close to the shore at first. We then carefully start to venture offshore and study or start to work, get married and raise children. During our
