SO YOU WANT TO BE AN advocate! Awesome! Before we start I'll need to define a few terms. An advocate is a person who publicly supports or recommends a particular cause or policy. Basically, you’re a new member of the movement! We’re glad to have you! Now, a person who has autism can be best described as a developmental disorder of variable severity that is characterized by difficulty in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior. Generally, the autism movement has been symbolized by the puzzle pieces. The origins of the puzzle piece, the primary symbol for autism, go back to 1963. It was created by Gerald Gasson, a parent and board member for the National Autistic Society (formerly The Society for Autistic Children) in London. The board believed autistic people suffered from a ‘puzzling’ condition. There has been talk of changing this, but these things are hard to morph without some serious push.
