About this ebook
This rattling 1887 action-adventure set in Africa’s Transvaal region appeared the same year as Haggard’s She. During the first Boer War, Captain John Niel plans to settle down on Silas Croft’s farm, but falls into a love triangle with his nieces. And, to further complicate Niel’s situation, he also must protect one of the nieces from a lecherous megalomaniac.

Reviews for Jess (Barnes & Noble Digital Library)
4 ratings1 review
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A romance set in the Transvaal at the time of the first British annexation and then the Boer reaction to it. Haggard clearly felt that the renunciation of the first annexation was dishonorable and unwise, and takes a negative attitude toward the Boers; the villain Frank Muller is a Boer. Overall the story is more a tragic romance than the kind of action adventure typical of the Quartermain series.
