Sanjana looked at herself in the bathroom mirror, her gaze lingering on her belly. She fingered the small tier of fat around her belly.

She looked quite good for her thirty-eight years – but like all women, especially Indian women, didn’t believe she did.

Sanjana picked up her bath towel from the rack and began wiping water droplets off her body. Once done, she turned to look at her naked body in the mirror again. She looked at her breasts which had started to sag and began methodically feeling them for lumps; she had lost her grandmother to breast cancer.

Once done, she patted her tummy wistfully again, thinking about the sundae she had allowed herself the day before. She sucked her tummy in and turned to look at her reflection in the mirror sideways. She decided she looked fine after all. She just had to hit the gym more regularly, even with all the distractions; even if she felt really depressed.

She then moved her hand down to the small tuft of pubic hair above her vagina. They were now as long as her little finger: it had been six months since she had used an epilator down there, for the anniversary, she remembered.

The anniversary… The day when it all began to go downhill, when Rohit told her that he had fallen for someone else and that he needed a divorce.

What she did next was almost reflexive.
